Miles and miles of trucks carrying coal and chrome to Maputo port. Why? Because Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) cannot rail the bulk commodities at the pace South African mines produce. TFR’s rolling stock and human capital capacity have been destroyed by politicians and their unsmart deployments. There is only one solution. Government needs to implement the rail reform. They have to allow third parties to pay a fee to use Transnet’s rail infrastructure so that they invest to bring their own rolling stock. Challenge is the following; 🇿🇦What happens to the cost of rail? 🇿🇦Who has readily available rolling stock? Some ideas; 🇿🇦Transnet should not lease the rail capacity to trading companies. 🇿🇦Mining companies with long life reserves in South Africa should be prioritised. 🇿🇦South African ports should be favored. Richards Bay, Saldanha, Qeberha, Durban, Cape Town, East London should get the preference.
