Here’s the Duke Class (Type 23) frigate HMS Somerset of Royal Navy outbound from HMNB Devonport Plymouth this morning. HMS Somerset, an anti-submarine vessel, was recently deployed into northern waters with the UK Carrier Strike Group (UK CSG). This clip appears to show Somerset taking friends and family of the ship’s company out to sea for the day, so they can gain insights into RN life. Video courtesy of Stephen Jagger

Here's HMS St Albans outbound from HMNB Devonport Plymouth yesterday morning. One of the few remaining Royal Navy Duke Class (Type 23) frigates in service, she was deploying allegedly on Towed Array Patrol Ship (TAPS) duty. That means using a sonar reeled out at distance behind the ship, to get away from the frigate's own noise, in order to listen out for submarines (or undersea nefarious activity) off the UK and in NATO waters generally. The prime target: intruding Russian submarines, though other tasks will be on the frigate's itinerary. Video courtesy of Stephen Jagger Meanwhile, sister vessel HMS Somerset returned home at the end of last week, after her own busy period on patrol that included monitoring the activities of the Russian naval vessel Yantar. The lattter is one of Moscow's key assets for gathering intelligence and also potentially conducting sabotage of seabed cables (including internet) and energy pipelines. In the pic here we see Yantar (nearest) being monitored by HMS Somerset. Photo: Royal Navy.

The Royal Navy Duke Class (Type 23) frigate HMS Portland is seen here outbound from HMNB Devonport this morning. Note the absence of Naval Strike Missiles (NSM). Portland was the second of the Dukes to receive them. Completed 'trials and loading eight of the upgraded Naval Strike Missiles (NSM) in Norway' in late 2024, according to the RN at the time. Here's the Royal Navy Hunt Class Mine Counter-measures Vessel (MCMV) HMS Ledbury HMS Ledbury outbound from HMNB Devonport Plymouth yesterday afternoon. Still going strong almost 45 years since commissioned (built by Vosper Thornycroft). Second of her class, only a few of which remain in RN service. They have, in fact, just about outlasted the successor Sandown Class in the UK fleet. Video courtesy of Stephen Jagger
