“Release the bittern!”🦑 And we did release this American bittern back into the grassy wetlands where he’s most at home. This bittern collided with a window, and a brave soul rescued him and brought him to the clinic. He was fully recovered after several days of care and we were happy to see him off. These secretive marsh birds stand tall in the grasses, their necks stretched up to look like reeds, while gazing below with their low-set eyes scanning for prey. We’d hate to be an unsuspecting frog or crayfish under this guy’s gaze. These birds have daggerlike beaks and strong necks. They can be very dangerous to handle in care, and we always work in pairs and wear goggles. In this scenario, he’s defensively trying to look big and scary. Well done, sir! 🎥: Stephanie Wood

Meanwhile, raptor fledgefest rages on! We send a huge shoutout to our friends at The Raptor Trust, who host the ultimate raptor rave over at their place, generously taking on the longer-term care of our kestrels. 📷: Michelle

Here, our jittery recovering window-collisions patients can forage for earthworms in seclusion. Twice a day they receive rehab visits for meds, cleaning and food refresh, but otherwise they’re undisturbed. With luck, these will all get released. 🎥: Lily Lugo

Mama’s back! After 10 days with us, she reunited with her mate Biggie in Prospect Park, and they greeted each other according to the traditional rituals. Ideally, she could have spent a few more days with us working on her waterproofing, but she was becoming agitated and depressed in care, so we opted to return her now and let her continue to waterproof on site. Mama, aka Paulette, had become partially coated in a tarlike substance and needed multiple baths to remove it, as well as treatment for any she had ingested. We’re happy to see the family back together! Thanks to the Swan Squad! Here’s hoping for a summer free of swan drama. 🦢 🎥: Mary Beth Purdy-Artz
