It’s been months since substantive #food aid reached Zamzam camp in North #Darfur, despite a #famine declaration weeks ago. But yesterday distributions of food parcels finally started there, enough to help 3000 families at least. It’s a start. A small, but symbolic one. One that staves off death for a few people for just a bit longer. Whats more is that it was made possible with national suppliers via Port #Sudan, a local partner, and regional authorities, and our NRC team. It came together in less than two weeks, to bring some relief to a difficult area that many describe has hard-to-#access. No big negotiations, complex convoy coordination (although did cross front lines), or massive imports. #Humanitarian aid is very necessary, and very possible, as long as all angles are considered and all capacities are connected. — I want to recognise the rapid and bold efforts of people and teams at: WTHO (the local organisation), AIGT (the national supplier), Darfur Regional Governor’s office (notably Mr Abdelbagi), and the North Darfur Humanitarian Aid Commission (especially Dr Abbas), and of course members of our team involved. Collective humanitarian spirit between all teams has made this humble and hopeful outcome possible. We hope very much to repeat and increase the action, though this depends on donor funding being sourced. — Also a statement from authorities here:

Am back visiting our team in #Darfur. Some neighbourhoods are still empty ruins scarred by #war, others are busy. Almost everyone struggling with growing food insecurity and trauma. We’re here to help children and vulnerable women affected by armed conflict, and those civilians facing catastrophic #hunger. This trip I’ve come to: -listen to affected communities on their priorities and coping strategies -help problem-solve for scale up options on our main #humanitarian programmes: education, food security, protection, and #emergency response -look to reopen our field office in Kerenik, and generally pushing beyond the city -discussing with local authorities #humanitarian #access arrangements and commitments -exchange with local organisations and responders, and INGOs present, on collective #humanitarian priorities and improved coordination (-see our courageous and dedicated team in action, many of whom returned from the safety of eastern #Chad to help respond to people’s basic needs) More to follow …

Today 4,000 kits of core relief items crossed and cleared from #Ethiopia into southeast #Sudan. It’s enough to improve the lives of 20,000 people, but the good news isn’t the number; it’s the route. We’ve been pushing for #humanitarian assistance to enter via as many border crossings as possible to max out the flow of lifesaving aid to people across this vast country. This is the first major aid shipment originating from Ethiopia into Sudan. Hopefully not the last; it was meant as a test case and to break new ground. To be frank, it took months to coordinate and build consensus with all relevant stakeholders, and to push through different and new procedures—but now that it’s established, much easier to re-run. Thanks to Governors in both Amhara (Ethiopia) and Gedaref (Sudan) for facilitating movements within and across their territories (not easy in current contexts on either side), for UN OCHA Ethiopia and our Ethiopia team for supporting clearances on the other side of the border, and the Humanitarian Aid Commission and Wali’s office in Gedaref for expediting clearances this side. With thanks also to flexible humanitarian donors, notably Sida, Norway MFA, and Swiss Development and Cooperation, for also sharing risks and uncertainties with us in treading new paths. — So far we’ve assisted over a quarter million people in our emergency response in Sudan, and supported 100 locally-led relief initiatives.

Between the crossfires and chaos, there’s a classroom. And amid the haze of war, the *brightest* hope might just be found in a student’s notebook. In the burnt-out, bullet-ridden, battle-damaged wreckage of the West #Darfur #Education ministry’s printing press, hangs the balance of a hundred thousand’s #conflict-affected children’s future — without education, the new generation might know nothing more than deprivation, suffering, violence, anxiety and loss. Their parents too were a generation born into a state of war. We can’t or shouldn’t normalise the terrible situation, but also must tend to needs beyond immediate survival. It’s usually deprioritised, but Education in emergencies should be valued as a #humanitarian priority: -Schooling provides a sense of safety and routine for children. -Learning transfers critical skills and knowledge for children and their families, and different ways to view the situation and connect with others. -Education offers hope for a better future, the foundations of a longer-term recovery. We’re looking at how we can restore this scholastic printing press in the coming weeks and months, among other activities in the state, although our funds are running thin.
