A rare critical fire danger over NW IL, and elevated for everything else west of the Fox River across northern IL In spite of light overnite rain, an extremely dry air mass flowing in (dewpoints 30°-40° below air temps), very windy conditions with sustained winds over 20mph and gusts 40+, full sunshine, all on top of lots of field stubble that has been snow cover free for several days to weeks, will combine to create dangerously dry fuel for any “spark” that could take hold This same inbound airmass created massive wildfires over western OK and KS yesterday Video from chaser Jaden Pappenheim Jaden Pappenheim

Hovering high above for the last several minutes over the NW Side of #Chicago, directly over the approach to #OHare runway 28C Planes pass at about 2300 feet here. This helo is above that and slowly floating from the NW to the SE and back again. Zoomed all the way in, not on any flight tracker 🤔

Winter Weather Advisory ⚠️ for Lake Cook Dupage and Will counties and south from there from 6PM Saturday to 6PM Sunday If it was just system #snow giving us a glancing blow from the expansive southern storm dumping every type of weather from #Chicago to the gulf coast, an easy forecast of 1”-4” north to south would be on the table But dance with the devil we must as Lake Michigan sits poised to be either a reluctant dance partner or the lead tango dancer in the snow show Forecasts range from 2”-9” in the city. 2” means no lake impact, 9” means we get a long duration lake feed I’m leaning toward the latter, as entrenched cold air, mid and low level wind convergence over the lake, a lengthy North-Northeast wind fetch and still open mid lake surface water should be enough to loft even a little moisture 2-3 miles upward to feast on an excellent snowflake growth zone that will feed into the immediate Chicago shore areas and add another 3”-5” to the system snow. Another tricky point is the ratio of liquid to snowfall. Usually we see a 10 to 1 mix. 0.1” liquid=1” snow. This cold air here will double that to 20 to 1 so even an extra 1/4 inch of liquid would be 5” of snow (0.25x20=5.0) to add in And by immediate shore areas I could see Midway getting double what O’Hare gets. Like Cicero Ave and east being a cutoff Here’s the model variance. Snow would start to trickle in about sunset Saturday and just hang out thru much of Sunday into the afternoon.

We get severe weather outlooks and excessive rain outlooks But we don’t get swamp ass outlooks So I’ll go ahead and issue one for this Saturday and Sunday Both afternoons forecast to climb to low 100° heat index temps. Heat index temps actually only 3-5° over air temps so just flat out hot and humid First 5 in the series is Saturday afternoon Last 3 are Sunday afternoon Right up to the lakefront too

Unless all 15 models here are wrong, we have a #snow filled Saturday in #Chicago One theme they all do seem to show is a slightly lower total on the immediate lakefront due to some surface warmth pushing in off Lake Michigan that will keep temps just above freezing and cause a little melting But it does look like 7”-9+” across all of Northern IL today Any air or road travel through the Midwest into Sunday will be challenging
