No changes to morning update on severe weather chances, but the system is finally showing its hand and round 1 looks to head decently south of the #Chicago metro area. That pushes the all-important warm frontal boundary well into central IL Question remains how far north that front pushes back today, but odds are decreasing it can reach or breach the magical I-80 weather wall. Midday to early afternoon trends still need to be closely monitored, but personally (this is just me speaking) wouldn’t be surprised to see that moderate risk over half the metro area slide south on the next update What does remain is a rainy day and the flooding threat hangs on as we sit on the cool side where all this moisture aloft will get wrung out. We are under a flood thru the afternoon More later as things play out, but early hi res morning models paint a much less severe picture across northern IL and Chicago Here are 5 looks at the key late afternoon 4PM forecast hour

A rare critical fire danger over NW IL, and elevated for everything else west of the Fox River across northern IL In spite of light overnite rain, an extremely dry air mass flowing in (dewpoints 30°-40° below air temps), very windy conditions with sustained winds over 20mph and gusts 40+, full sunshine, all on top of lots of field stubble that has been snow cover free for several days to weeks, will combine to create dangerously dry fuel for any “spark” that could take hold This same inbound airmass created massive wildfires over western OK and KS yesterday Video from chaser Jaden Pappenheim Jaden Pappenheim

Cook County and the city of #Chicago now officially in a Heat Warning from noon Monday until 10PM Wednesday night Due to the “Urban Heat Island” effect Cook County has slightly lower criteria to trigger a Heat Warning than the surrounding counties do. For Cook, 3 consecutive days of 100° or higher heat indices (that’s the current forecast) or two consecutive days of 105°+ (we may hit that Tuesday) trigger the warning (Forecast heat indexes below for Mon-Thur) We know the drill, this is t our first heat rodeo and we ain’t Europe. Hydrate, cool down where you can, check on your neighbors that can’t handle heat, keep your four legged friends cool too. Nighttime can cause more heat stress than day particularly for elderly folks who might in truth be too afraid to leave windows open and have no A/C. Be neighborly and help them out.

Winter Weather Advisory ⚠️ for Lake Cook Dupage and Will counties and south from there from 6PM Saturday to 6PM Sunday If it was just system #snow giving us a glancing blow from the expansive southern storm dumping every type of weather from #Chicago to the gulf coast, an easy forecast of 1”-4” north to south would be on the table But dance with the devil we must as Lake Michigan sits poised to be either a reluctant dance partner or the lead tango dancer in the snow show Forecasts range from 2”-9” in the city. 2” means no lake impact, 9” means we get a long duration lake feed I’m leaning toward the latter, as entrenched cold air, mid and low level wind convergence over the lake, a lengthy North-Northeast wind fetch and still open mid lake surface water should be enough to loft even a little moisture 2-3 miles upward to feast on an excellent snowflake growth zone that will feed into the immediate Chicago shore areas and add another 3”-5” to the system snow. Another tricky point is the ratio of liquid to snowfall. Usually we see a 10 to 1 mix. 0.1” liquid=1” snow. This cold air here will double that to 20 to 1 so even an extra 1/4 inch of liquid would be 5” of snow (0.25x20=5.0) to add in And by immediate shore areas I could see Midway getting double what O’Hare gets. Like Cicero Ave and east being a cutoff Here’s the model variance. Snow would start to trickle in about sunset Saturday and just hang out thru much of Sunday into the afternoon.

Trend towards some #snow around #Chicago for later Saturday into Sunday is still on the board Now 4 of 5 models put some snow into the area as the monster winter storm passes well to our south Frosty fly in the ointment is the impact of lake effect snow materializing, or not. That’s the difference of a little to 3”, or the 8-9” advertised by the UK model Short range hi res models still 2 days out til we see that, but wording has dropped into the official long range NWS forecast for this chance of snow for the 2nd half of the weekend All of this of course follows our deepest freeze in 7 years that kicks in about midnight Thursday and will get some -30° and dare I say -40° wind chills by sunrise Friday. Talk about model agreement? 14 models all go at least -20°

A long post but worthy of a couple minutes read Did more analysis on the Monday storms and one key thing to always remember with watches and warnings, particularly tornado, if you are not necessarily in the warning, being close needs your attention They tend to take more erratic paths around here as we don’t typically get those massive Plains supercells. We see line embedded spin ups and storms here frequently have multiple boundary interactions (like storm outflows coupled with a lake breeze) that tornadoes love to spin along Although not necessarily a boundary interaction, yesterdays massive storm had a circulation that occluded (ate itself) and reformed a couple times And the Velocity radar scan from the Midway Airport Terminal Doppler captured one beautifully This is one of the hands down coolest radar loops I’ve seen. I’ve played this many times today with just a wow outcome Watch inside the blue outline where the red and green colors brighten and swirl together and travel from north or Orland to directly over Harvey It was on a south/SE path to start and looped due east then NE and finished moving NW

Unless all 15 models here are wrong, we have a #snow filled Saturday in #Chicago One theme they all do seem to show is a slightly lower total on the immediate lakefront due to some surface warmth pushing in off Lake Michigan that will keep temps just above freezing and cause a little melting But it does look like 7”-9+” across all of Northern IL today Any air or road travel through the Midwest into Sunday will be challenging
