Political prisoners released from authoritarian regimes often face the struggle of rebuilding their lives while lacking access to basic needs, security, healthcare, employment, and community support. Recovery and reintegration are essential parts of the path toward lasting freedom and dignity. Through online support sessions and community networks, the WLC Political Prisoners Support Team (PPST) helps accompany those who have been liberated on their path toward recovery and dignity. The After Liberation handbook is available for free on the WLC website.

Carine Kanimba, WLC spokesperson, participated at the event “International Journalism Festival” in Perugia, Italy, and mentioned that she often hears than #Rwanda is a model for the rest of Africa because the streets are clean. “Imagine you walk into a house where everything is clean, and the owner of the house offers you a cup of tea, and you look around and you think it’s really clean, but there is a closed door in that house and you see blood going underneath the door, and hear screams behind the door, but you keep drinking your tea and you say it’s clean. That’s what’s happening in Rwanda. The reality is that Rwanda is a brutal dictatorship, and we have to continue to exposing this injustice.” International Journalism Festival #ijf24
