I'm surprised that it took this long, but 15 minutes into STARFLEET ACADEMY, we're hit with the line: "separating children from their parents isn't exceptional, it's reprehensible." THE FIRST 15 MINUTES: A white mother who was tricked/forced into piracy as the only means of feeding her diverse son (um... replicators?) is sentenced to a Federation Rehabilitation center after being complicit in a theft that led to the death of a Starfleet officer (ostensibly someone's son), and she and her young son are separated. Holly Hunter so believed that it was wrong to take the woman's son from her because she was really a victim of the white male pirate who lied to her, tricking her into a life of crime, that she "left Star Fleet in disgrace."
