Did this wet weekend finally bust the drought? Not quite, but we definitely made a nice dent! I’ve been getting a lot of questions about when water restrictions might be lifted. The short answer is: not yet. Here is a breakdown of where we stand: Droughts are a Marathon, Not a Sprint. This current drought started building last fall. Droughts don't form overnight, and they don't go away overnight, either. It takes time to reverse months of dry weather. Summer Evaporation Rates: We are moving right into the summer months where water usage and natural evaporation rates are sky-high. Right now, getting 1" of rain a week is essentially our break-even point. It keeps things from getting worse, but it doesn't erase the deep deficits we've already built up. The Big Picture: Take a look at the map above, which shows the total precipitation needed in just one month to completely end the drought going into the weekend. Depending on where you live in the Carolinas, we still need anywhere from 10 to over 21 inches of rain, minus what we just got, to remove drought in 30 days. So, while this weekend's rain was fantastic progress, we still have a long way to go. Keep up the great work on water conservation, and with this rain, no need to water for a while. Stay weather-aware, Carolinas! ❄️ A major winter storm is heading our way, starting late Friday night into Saturday morning. Every county in North and South Carolina is currently under a winter storm watch or warning. Expect heavy, powdery snow—especially east of I-77—with some areas potentially seeing 10+ inches and blizzard-like conditions near the coast. In Charlotte, we’re looking at a solid 3–6 inches, though a "boom" scenario could bring up to 8 inches. Road conditions will deteriorate quickly starting around 4:00 AM Saturday.
