She didn’t have to save those girls. The water was already rising. The screaming had already started. Every instinct in her body said run. She stayed and tried anyway. She was a teenager at Camp Mystic in Texas when the floods came and took everything. And in the middle of that chaos — when most people freeze, when most people save themselves — she saved others. And then the river took her. She had her whole life in front of her. A whole story that never got told. She was someone’s daughter, someone’s future, someone’s everything. She was my best friend’s niece. I don’t know what makes a person do that. I don’t know where that kind of courage comes from at that age — when you’re still figuring out who you are and the water is up to your chest and the night is loud with terror. But she knew. She knew exactly who she was. Some people live 80 years and never find that out. She found it in her last moments — and she spent it on somebody else’s kids. That’s not a tragedy. That’s a legacy. Rest in the arms of the One who saw what you did, sweetheart.
