The Romans built this villa in the early 4th century, probably for a very high‑ranking official, maybe even an emperor. Every corridor, every room, every bath, every reception hall was covered in mosaics. What’s even more impressive is how it survived. The villa was buried under mud after a massive landslide in the Middle Ages, and that disaster ended up being its protection. The roof collapsed, the walls fell, but the mosaics stayed sealed under layers of earth for centuries, untouched by weather, war, or looters. When archaeologists finally uncovered it in the 20th century, they found the largest collection of Roman mosaics anywhere...more than 3,500 square meters of them!

Westward, launched in 1910, was the largest yacht ever built under the 1908 International Rule. 135 feet from bow to stern. She had an incredible life on the water, dominating races on both sides of the Atlantic. But her story ended in 1947 when she was scuttled in the English Channel per her final owner's wishes. She still holds the title. The 1908 Rule was retired long ago, so Westward remains the largest yacht ever built to it. Nothing of the original survives today.

I've never seen this technique before. It’s gorgeous! It's called tambour (or Luneville) embroidery and uses a tiny hook instead of a needle to create super fast chain-stitch work. It started in 18th‑century France, and later became a foundation technique for Haute Couture houses like Chanel and Dior. Here’s Alexandrina Dordea showing us this wonderful craft.

It only made it through the centuries because people in the Middle Ages thought the rider was Constantine, the emperor who legalized Christianity, so the statue escaped the melting down that destroyed almost all other bronze works. No one is completely sure where it originally stood, maybe the Roman Forum, maybe near his column in Piazza Colonna. By the 8th century it was at the Lateran. In 1538 Pope Paul III had it moved to the Capitoline Hill, where Michelangelo made it the heart of his redesign of the square. It stayed outdoors for centuries until structural problems appeared in 1979. In 1981 the original was brought inside the Palazzo dei Conservatori for protection, and a replica now stands in its place. Still one of the most important surviving monuments of Roman imperial art.
