It is hard to overstate the dilemma facing Benjamin Netanyahu - בנימין נתניהו. He has promised the Israeli public victories that he cannot deliver - partly because of his own policies, partly because of the constraints Trump has placed on Israel’s freedom of action. The deeper problem is that even if he wanted to be more aggressive, it is far from clear that it would change the outcome. At this point, everyone understands where this is heading - a negotiated deal. Today on CNN International with Becky Anderson.

I’ve been asked in multiple interviews today what I think of claims by critics of Benjamin Netanyahu - בנימין נתניהו that the strike on Iran was politically motivated. My answer: that’s absurd. Iran’s nuclear program has long been seen as an existential threat - by every Israeli prime minister, left and right. This is not a moment for sandbox politics. Israel acted to defend itself. Now is the time to stand united, not divide, as even greater dangers may still lie ahead.

Iran is weaker, Hamas is more isolated, and Donald J. Trump is putting serious political capital to help push through a deal. All this makes conditions for an agreement possible. But, Israel also needs a serious day-after plan: one that rebuilds Gaza, but also ensures Hamas can’t rearm or reestablish control. That means security, governance, and a regional framework. And one other point: any attempt to equate Hamas with Israel’s far-right parties is morally wrong. There’s no comparison. Today with Matt Frei on Channel 4 News.
