The Yankees, they're not a good team. I don't care what their record is. They have a lot of wild pitches. They make a lot of mistakes in the field. They don't run the bases very well.

The Yankees can't wait to get Giancarlo Stanton back, but if he's on third during the sixth inning Monday, he doesn't score on that passed ball. Jasson Dominguez changed the entire complexion of that game. My piece on Martian’s dynamic speed tool for SI!

Cam Schlittler avenging his father, Gerrit Cole. Raffy Devers stood no shot. He's one of the most exciting Yankees they've developed in some time. 27 pitches over 98 MPH is absurd.

How does a pitch move like this? The Yankees really have a good one with Cam Schlittler. A lineup with two MVP candidates got handled with ease.

We’re about to see how much the Yankees love Anthony Volpe. Jose Caballero is so good.

Juan Soto would let that fall and it would be an inside the park home run. It’s so sad the guy can't get the Yankees off his mind because we're good here!

There are a lot of people on the national stage who are seeing our brand of baseball for the first time. We don't come through. We make soul-crushing mistakes. We suck for two months, have a hot September, and get embarrassed every October. We don't care if you don't like it.

Will Warren is becoming one of the better middle-to-back-end starters the Yankees have developed. Cam Schlittler will get all the love — as he should — but Warren should get a ton of credit for keeping them afloat before Gerrit Cole comes back. It's still way too early to make any assumptions on what he'll look like at the end of 2026, but he has come a long way from the guy who was subject to implosions every fifth day.

Spencer Jones may or may not hit, but at a minimum, the Yankees will have a solid outfield while he’s here. This can give Aaron Judge a chance to get off his feet and see if their prospect can play some centerfield, too. My outfield piece for SI!

The Yankees are a pitching factory. They threw a trio of young arms with team control against the Royals and they all dominated. Were it not for an error in the outfield that drove up Cam Schlittler’s pitch count, he might have joined the seven inning club along with Ryan Weathers and Will Warren.

The Yankees should regret not attempting to blow away Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s offer from the Dodgers. He would have been the proper co-ace they have searched for the last few years. My piece on Yamamoto for Sports Illustrated:

Jazz might be one of the coolest Yankees we've had in a bit. There have been different high-energy guys like Didi and Swish, but Jazz’s electricity is on another level. Look at this bat flip. The Yankees get a lot of flack for being too buttoned up. Despite that, Jazz hasn't missed a beat, and the team has embraced his high energy. Baseball needs more players like him who play with such joy and enthusiasm. This team and this sport don’t need to be so buttoned up constantly. It’s a shame to hear the garbage the vets in Miami put him through. The org itself didn’t seem keen on him because they traded a young, athletic player with a few years of control. THEIR LOSS. They don't know what they had.

Devin Williams’ electric pitch to work himself out of his own jam. 95.1 MPH up and in after a nine-pitch AB against an old teammate. In a perfect world, Williams has a dominant 9th for his Yankees debut. No drama. No runs on the board. Still, there’s something so cool about guys digging themselves out of holes they have created. Especially since this was his old team, and they probably had him well-scouted. PROFESSIONAL, to say the least. We’ll kick and scream when he inevitably blows a save, but that’s fine. Nobody is Mo 🤷

The Yankees haven’t seen this version of Luis Gil in a long time. The velocity returned. The strikeout stuff was there, too. Hopefully Gil gets back on track and does it over the course of a full season. He just needs to be healthy. My Gil piece for SI!

Ben Rice is now this generation’s Kyle Schwarber. The Yankees should keep leading him off. Every time we look up, Rice hits a ball 100 MPH. To add to the mashing, he drew some walks on his first night in the lead-off spot. That's about as Schwarber-esque as you can get. Keep him there and see what happens.

The Yankees bullpen is David Bednar, and a bunch of question mark marks. Does Brian Cashman have one of those Wandy-Peralta-Early-Season-Trade-Out-Of-Nowhere type deals in him? My piece on the hope for last-minute reinforcements for SI

The Yankees are using bulletin board material as motivation this postseason: • Cam Schlittler responded to 40-year-old podcasters airing out his mom's social media accounts. • Aaron Boone went at Buck Martinez, who said the Yankees aren't a good team. This is a little different than how these Yanks operated in the past, especially under Boone. Boone employs a more stoic approach to things, which feels a little jarring in this market, but they rarely acknowledge outside noise or allow criticisms to penetrate their walls. We’ve seen them do this other times as well. Last season, Cashman looked like he was ready to go to war with the reporters during the GM meetings. In some ways, they're allowing players to voice their frustrations about things they're going through with the team as well. Look at what happened with Jazz this week. He's a competitor who was pissed he didn't start in game one of the Wild Card. He voiced it, mentioning that he used MLB The Show to work through his frustrations. In the end, his defense and base running were a huge reason they won game two. His hit in game three extended the four-run rally too. Bulletin board material is what Belichick and Brady used to do during their glory days. CC Sabathia mentioned that he did the same thing when he pitched. CC, in particular, said he picked a person out of a lineup and told himself that they were trashing him or saying they didn't believe in him. Look, whatever works. They just beat Boston, who owned them all year. If this is the edge they feel they need for a team they went 5-8 against, I love it. Keep yapping if you need to.
