One of Pakistan's leading scholars and jurists, Shaykh al-Islam Mufti Taqi Usmani, recently delivered a speech on Iran and the issues of Sunni-Shia sectarianism. The following clip, which is in Urdu, highlights these points: (1) The US and Israel did not attack Iran because it is “Shia”, but because it is regarded as a foundational part of Islam. (2) Despite our differences, this is not the time to raise Sunni and Shia polemics. In fact, we should be united. (3) If we stand united as a Umma, then the US and Israel cannot harm us. (4) The US and Israel are doing their best to sow seeds of sectarianism and hatred between Sunnis and Shias so that we fight each other. These were some of the main points. It is encouraging to see figures like Mufti Taqi and other senior scholars speaking with such clarity in these turbulent times. This is how true scholars lead and speak.

This is a significant development for Sunni and Shia communities in India. Moulana Khalil-ur-Rahman Sajjad Nomani, a prominent Deobandi scholar and son of the late Moulana Manzur Nomani (r.a.), visited leading Shia scholars in Delhi to show support for the Shia community amid the Iran-Israel war. Remember who this man is. He is not an ordinary Deobandi living in the West; he is one of India's foremost scholars. Additionally, his father, Moulana Manzur, was a renowned debater and scholar of the Deobandi seminary, known for his writings against Iran in the 1980s. His book ‘Irani Inqilab’ (Iranian Revolution) is widely recognised, which I read many years ago, attests to his prominence. Therefore, Moulana Sajjad Nomani has emphasised that he is fully aware of the theological differences, as his father authored academic works on the subject. However, he stated that now is not the time to dwell on these differences; he described such debates as highly “foolish” and “irresponsible,” since the enemy does not differentiate between Sunni and Shia. He affirms that the attack on the Shia is an attack on Islam. Scholars like Mufti Taqi Usmani and Moulana Sajjad Nomani, among others, are true representatives of Islam. It is encouraging to see greater unity in Pakistan and India. Unfortunately, sectarianism appears to be more prevalent in the UK, which is baffling.

Question: I saw this video on YouTube titled “Why are all molvis fat?”. The Moulana gives a reason, is this a valid justification? Answer: Irrespective of whether a person is a scholar or not, overeating is highly blameworthy in our religion. In fact, less eating is the Sunna of our beloved Prophet ﷺ - this is clear from his blessed Seerah. If a person is fat, or has a large stomach, due to biological or medical conditions, then they are excused. But to intentionally eat whereby a person puts so much weight on to the point that their belly walks in front of them is censurable. Our mother Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: ‘Never did the family of Muhammad ﷺ eat to the fill, since their arrival to Al-Madinah, the bread of wheat for three successive nights until his death’ (Bukhari). Our beloved Prophet ﷺ said: 'No man fills a container worse than his stomach. A few morsels that keep his back upright are sufficient for him. If he has to, then he should keep one-third for food, one-third for drink and one-third for his breathing’ (al-Tirmidhi). Imam Al-Ghazali argues in his al-Arba’een that the cause of all spiritual illnesses is overeating as it induces a person to fulfil their desires and commit sin. Hence, the first spiritual illness he begins with in the third chapter of this book is overeating. Finally, trying to look after your physical health, as well as spiritual, is part of our din. And Allah knows best. May He, the Almighty, enable us all. Amin.

It is wonderful to see Ustadh Abdur Rahman Hasan (may Allah reward him) acknowledge the deep understanding that Hanafi scholars, particularly Imam Al-Tahawi, have regarding Hadith. Ustadh promises that anyone who reads Imam Al-Tahawi’s work will want to become a Hanafi. :) The truth is that, unlike the other schools of thought—may Allah bless them all and reward their scholars—the Hanafi school is not based solely on one individual. Instead, it draws from the collective insights of 40 reputable scholars who deliberated and analyzed each juristic issue with Imam Abu Hanifah before incorporating it into the canon of Fiqh. Thus, only those who study it will truly appreciate its subtle and profound understanding of the Quran and Sunna.

The sanctity of our first Qibla and the third most sacred mosque in Islam is being destroyed by thugs, while Muslim leaders watch. May Allah curse these evil individuals and those Muslim governments who have normalised their relationship with them. Amin.
