Yesterday the People of Israel celebrated the end of the British Mandate over our land and the end of thousands of years of exile and injustice. We celebrated our historic return back to having sovereignty over our land - Yom Haatzmaout 🇮🇱 In Montreal, I went out to have some powerful conversations and this man came up to me. He is the perfect example of a Jew hater who uses the Palestinian cause to channel his antisemitism instead of fight for justice. One thing is certain the people of Israel are forever tied to our land and the more we are shamed for it or the more that it is rejected - the more we prove we aren’t going anywhere. I would never tell a Jew Merry Christmas or Happy Easter, and for the same reason I would not tell another Jew Happy New Year. We already have our own New Years, rooted in Rosh Hashanah and in the Land of Israel. Since our displacement, Jewish life in diaspora has always carried the risk of assimilation, and survival was never meant to be the end goal. We are meant to thrive. That begins with sovereignty over time, which is why the first mitzva is about time itself. Time shapes our values, our rhythms, and the way we see the world. While I use the Gregorian calendar for logistics, I do not use it for spiritual reflection or renewal. January 1st belongs to a Christian framework that is not ours. Jewish spirituality is Hebrew, ancient, and intentional. So yes, it matters. We are in the year 5786.
