A tiger’s tongue is covered with tiny, backward-facing structures called papillae, made of keratin, the same protein found in human fingernails. These structures give the tongue its rough texture and help the tiger scrape meat from bones while feeding. They also assist with grooming and removing fur, dirt and loose skin. The catch is that these papillae are so abrasive that repeated licking can damage human skin. Nature equipped the tiger with a tongue that does more than taste food. It also helps process its prey.

An armoured catfish reportedly spent 10 days dead and dried out, only to come back to life after being soaked in river water. Before concluding that the fish came back from the dead, there is a biological question to consider. Some armoured catfish can breathe air using a modified digestive tract, allowing them to survive in water with low oxygen levels. Some species also tolerate harsh environmental conditions. But surviving outside water is not the same as surviving complete desiccation. If the fish was truly dead, rehydration would not bring it back to life. The key questions is, Was it actually dead, or had it entered a state of inactivity? Nature can be surprising, but the science lies in distinguishing what is possible from what a viral video claims.

A dog can carry 6, 8, even 12 puppies in one pregnancy. The secret is that dogs have a bicornuate uterus, meaning the uterus has two long horns where embryos can implant and develop. Instead of one baby occupying the womb, multiple puppies grow along these two uterine horns, each within its own amniotic sac. As pregnancy progresses, the uterus expands to accommodate the growing puppies. Litter size depends on the breed, the mother's age and other reproductive factors. Nature has a way of making multiple births possible without requiring a separate womb for every puppy.

With all the concerns about sexual health, should we really ignore the risks of oral sex? The vagina has its own microbiome and protective mechanisms, but the mouth is not a sterile environment either. Oral sex can transmit infections, including herpes, gonorrhoea, syphilis and HPV. Pleasure is a choice. Protection should be part of it.

The appendix can be removed, and the body can continue functioning without it. But the appendix is not completely useless. Research suggests that it plays a role in immune function and may serve as a reservoir for beneficial gut bacteria. When the appendix becomes inflamed, a condition called appendicitis, it can cause severe abdominal pain and may require surgical removal, known as an appendicectomy. Interestingly, the body can adapt to its absence. However, suspected appendicitis requires urgent medical assessment because a ruptured appendix can lead to a life-threatening infection. An organ can have a biological function without being essential for survival. Biology is rarely as simple as labelling an organ useless.
