Nolan stated, “Malick's influence on my work is very clear, and Malick more than almost any other filmmaker I could name, his work is immediately recognizable. His films are all very, very connected with each other, and they’re very recognizably his work but it’s very tough to put your finger on why that is or what you’re seeing in that. The technique is not immediately obvious. I think it's that unifying mind behind the films that really shows the unique nature of his vision and that he is a very controlling creative.” Fincher added that, “I think that with Malick you go to have something else illuminated for you other than, you know, what would it be like to get away with murder. You're going to see somebody who labored over something. You're going to see something that wasn't just the next thing on the assembly line. You’re seeing something that was thought about and meditated over, and you’re going to see this thing that's a one-off.”
