NEWS: The Police in KwaZulu-Natal have refuted claims that they are simply accompanying protesters currently marauding in the Durban CBD and allow crime to be committed in their presence. They say what is unfolding in Durban is a crowd management situation and they have a responsibility to preserve lives, to protect protect property, and at the same strike a delicate balance between allowing people to exercise their constitutional right to march and enforcing the law. Where the situation gets out of hand, they continue to use minimum legal force such as stun grenades, teargas and robber bullets. More police resources are being redeployed from various parts of the province to augment the numbers on the streets of Durban. They added that as the marches continue, police intelligence officers are hard at work identifying persons of interests and at the appropriate time, detectives will follow up, gather evidence and effect arrests. They stressed that they are doing their best not to engage in actions that may exacerbate the situation - KZN Tonight Podcast
