The Portuguese were struck by the beauty of Indigenous Brazilian women at the time of Brazil's discovery. Many Indigenous men traded their partners to the Portuguese in exchange for mirrors. Colonizers would sometimes have as many as ten women and no longer wished to return to Portugal - a situation that drew criticism from the priests present in Brazil.
