Mozambique Police teargas people who gathered this morning to peacefully protest at the scene of the brutal killing of opposition lawyer, Elvino Dias and a party official, Paulo Guambe. This is clear disproportionate of force. 1st People have the right to peacefully protest. Dispersing them is illegal and a serious violation of right to assembly, protest and expression. 2nd Even if there was a need to disperse the group, the use of teargas was totally unacceptable and unnecessary. The new post-election protest instruction is to wear black, stop the car, and hoot for 15 minutes from midday, for 3 days. This video was taken downtown. 1st day was very peaceful. Let's see what the police will do to keep things like this or turn this into a violent protest.

Tonight, the pots&pans protest went beyond the Maputo city center. Across the city, people went to streets and balconies to beat pots, pans while shouting "this country is ours" and "Venancio". You may not like Venancio Mondlane and his methods. But you have to admit: this man has written his own page in the history of Mozambique.
