JUST IN: Zenith has been invited to join Progmat's Tokenized JGB and On-chain Repo Working Group, a consortium bringing together MUFG, Mizuho, Sumitomo Mitsui, BlackRock Japan, State Street, SBI Securities, Japan Exchange Group, and other major players, conducting a joint study on bringing Japan's $1.6 trillion JGB (Japanese Government Bond) repo market on-chain. Japan's JGB repo market is one of the largest in the world, processing ¥250-270 trillion annually and representing roughly 10% of the global government bond-backed repo market. Today it settles a business day after a trade is executed, operates within traditional market hours, and requires manual processes at every step. The working group is targeting same-day settlement, 24/7 availability, and cross-border access, enabling fully on-chain repo transactions using tokenized JGB collateral paired with stablecoin cash legs via lending protocols. General purpose blockchains are dead. Ethereum and Solana pioneered DeFi and built the world's most active programmable financial ecosystem: 76M+ deployed smart contracts, 127M active wallets, and $160B in DeFi TVL. That foundation is real and it matters, but the institutions moving trillions on-chain chose different infrastructure entirely. Canton Network already processes $9T in monthly institutional settlement, DTCC is tokenizing U.S. Treasuries on it, Broadridge processes $8T+ in monthly repo on it, JPMorgan and HSBC are running production operations on it. These two worlds weren't competing, they were building in different languages for different requirements, with no native connection between them. Our recent report (p.19) cites Canton's Polyglot Whitepaper on what was needed: "Canton Network aims to apply the best parts of crypto and DeFi to traditional finance, and to break down the currently hard barrier between those two worlds." Cross-chain infrastructure has a vocabulary problem. The word "Atomic" appears in bridge protocols, HTLC swaps and interoperability solutions of every kind. It's being used to describe mechanisms that deliver fundamentally different guarantees, and the industry isn't being precise enough about the difference. > Economic atomicity is what most bridges and cross-chain swaps deliver. The smart contract guarantees an all-or-nothing outcome at the application layer, but both legs still settle on separate chains through separate consensus mechanisms. The guarantee depends on both parties behaving rationally within timelock windows that are measured in hours. When a validator gets compromised, a chain reorgs, an attacker locks counterparty capital and simply waits, the smart contract can't protect against any of it. The window of exposure between two separate settlement events is where the damage happens. > Consensus-level atomicity is what Zenith delivers. Both legs of a transaction are processed within the same single consensus mechanism as one indivisible operation. There is no window and no timelock. The protocol itself guarantees that both legs commit together or neither does, regardless of what either party does or what the infrastructure beneath them does. For consumer applications that distinction is manageable, but for institutional finance moving real capital across chain boundaries, it's the difference between infrastructure you can depend on and infrastructure that works until something goes wrong. The EVM execution adds a few hundred milliseconds to Canton's native finality time, that's the entire overhead. Compared to timelock windows measured in hours, the latency difference alone changes what's possible to build. Until now, accessing Canton Network as a developer meant learning Daml. For most of the Ethereum ecosystem, that was a wall and the institutional infrastructure on the other side of it remained out of reach regardless of how good your product was. Zenith changes that. Your existing Solidity contracts work on Zenith EVM without modification with the same tooling and one RPC endpoint change. The developer experience is EVM-equivalent: Hardhat, Foundry, MetaMask, all working exactly as expected. What changes is what your application can now touch: Canton-native assets, Daml-based settlement workflows, and institutional counterparties running live production operations on the same ledger.
