Among the Hamer (Hamar) people of Ethiopia's Omo Valley, the practice of pressing one's face or inhaling the warmth emanating from the abdomen of a recently slaughtered animal is deeply embedded in both survival and ritualistic significance. Within a pastoral setting characterized by cold nights and limited resources, the residual warmth of the animal is utilized to aid in maintaining body heat. Beyond its practical application, this act also holds symbolic importance, signifying a profound connection to the animal's vitality, inherent strength, and the reverence accorded to livestock that sustain the community. No part is considered waste; instead, every component serves a distinct purpose.
