So, they wait until nightfall and push them back under the cover of darkness, when no border guard personnel are present. What’s surprising is that the Chief Minister seems completely unaware that it’s been 15 years since the Bangladesh Rifles were renamed the Border Guard Bangladesh or BGB and there's in-fact an extradition treaty between India and Bangladesh. It's been 8 long hours since Bangladesh, a country of 170 million, has been out of communication with the rest of the world. The authorities in Bangladesh shut down the cellular network and internet service across the entire country following violent clashes between security forces and students. The students have been demanding reforms to a controversial quota system that gives advantages in job placements to family members of freedom fighters. Thirty-two people, mostly young students, have lost their lives and the number of death is likely to increase. This disturbing video from Dhaka exemplifies the police brutality in Bangladesh. Shykh Yamin, a computer science student at the Military Institute of Science and Technology, was dragged inside a police APC from the protest. He was shot and then his body was tossed onto the road. Do you see any regard for human life in this video? Yamin was still alive when the cops tossed him onto the road; he later died from his injuries.

Since the internet connection was partially restored in Bangladesh, graphic images and videos have flooded the web. In one such video, members of the Bangladesh police are seen shooting at an injured person from point-blank range (at south of Dhaka, Shanir Akhra area). The injured individual was being carried away by another protestor, but the police shot both. Fearing safety, the person who was assisting ran away with his life, leaving the injured at the mercy of almighty. They were unarmed. Sheikh Hasina and her associates should be held responsible for this carnage. I'm at a loss for words to describe this. Not once did Hasina mention the students who lost their lives during the recent protests during her latest presser with business leaders. The police killed at least 170 students (the actual number is likely higher), but she didn't express any condolences, nor did she address the police brutality. All she said was that the protest was orchestrated by 'Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Bangladesh Nationalist Party-BNP,' and she will go to any extent to arrest and punish the perpetrators. This is sickening. What a classic case of a dictator she is!

I would request you - especially the Indian civil society, journalists, policy makers and officials; to listen to this random individual's statement. He openly wishes to find journalists associated with The Daily Star and Prothom Alo in order to cause them harm. He's saying this on the record, in front of a crowd of hundreds. Do you see anyone reacting to it negatively? A very specific group has systematically established this narrative that these newspapers serve the purpose of India, and the BJP government's blind support for the deposed Bangladesh Awami League has helped them cement it. The Awami League's rampant corruption, endless human rights abuses, and sham elections and hundreds of border killings at Bangladesh border were all visibly endorsed by Narendra Modi government without any "ifs" or "buts." Additionally, mistreatments of Muslim community in India, one-sided contracts that serve only Indian interests, along with Delhi's regular interference in Bangladesh's security and foreign policy, have made things worse. It is in the interest of both countries to have a working relationship. But, it is India that must take the first step: return the fugitive Awami League leaders to Bangladesh, and detain and hand over the murderers of Osman Hadi — demonstrate that you care. Let the murderers and corrupt face the law. Only then might the people of Bangladesh consider de-escalating this situation. India needs to correct what it has done all these years. On Friday, July 19, 2024, near Rampura Police Station in Dhaka, residents of the Banasree area took to the streets to protest against the student killings. A clash ensued between the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB), the police, and the general protesters. At one point, unable to withstand the continuous shooting from the BGB and police, several teenagers climbed a nearby under-construction four-story building. When the BGB and police regained control of the area, a few police officers entered the building. While everyone else managed to escape, one teenager got trapped. He tried to hide by climbing down the side of the fourth-floor roof. However, two police officers spotted him and fired six rounds from a revolver, ensuring the teenager's death before leaving. The video captures this very scene. What an egregious violation of human rights! Across multiple locations in Bangladesh, people were seen demolishing statues of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The Bangladesh Awami League , has long been centered around a cult of personality focused on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Revered as the nation's founding father who led Bangladesh to independence in 1971, Mujib's popularity soared in the immediate post-independence years. However, over time, his administration became marred by corruption and nepotism among party members and close relatives. In 1975, a too-confident Mujib established a one-party system, banning newspapers and dissolving opposition parties. This autocratic shift drastically eroded his public support and culminated in the tragic assassination of Mujib and his entire family. Sheikh Hasina's government, which gained power for the second time in 2008, appears to have followed a similar trajectory. Her administration has been criticized for implementing the draconian Digital Security Act, abolishing the caretaker government system, and allowing unchecked corruption to spread, effectively creating a classic fiefdom. The opposition parties have been rendered almost non-existent, with hundreds of thousands of Bangladesh Nationalist Party-BNP and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami members imprisoned on what are widely considered to be false charges. Hasina established total control under the guise of democracy, only to find herself facing a fate similar to the one she once dictated for others—forced to flee the country.

Yesterday, I tweeted a video showing members of the Bangladesh police callously tossing the injured body of Shykh Yamin, a student at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST). They displayed no respect for human life, and left Yamin to die on the street. Today, I received another video of the same incident, and I am speechless at the brutality. The police not only tossed Yamin's body from their APC (armored personnel carrier) onto the road, but they also threw him over the road divider in the most inhumane manner. A police force like this deserves to be sanctioned and blacklisted. Its members should never be deployed on any UN Peacekeeping or receive foreign aid.

In this clear footage, you can easily notice, BA 6047 Lieutenant Colonel Md.Redwanul Islam, commanding officer of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), taking targeted shots using an AK-47 assault rifle. Simultaneously, members of the Bangladesh Police are using Chinese Type 56 SKS rifles to aim and shoot at unarmed civilians. The use of such lethal weapons to disperse a civilian crowd is a clear violation of the Geneva Conventions; lethal force against unarmed civilians is explicitly prohibited and is classified as a grave breach of international humanitarian law. Soldiers of the Bangladesh Army opened fire on Chhatra League (the ruling party Bangladesh Awami League's student wing) miscreants in the Comilla district today. In this video, you can hear people screaming, "Shoot at them, shoot at them," and immediately afterward, soldiers fired burst rounds to disperse the Chhatra League. Similar incidents have been reported at multiple locations across the country.

অত্যন্ত বিশ্বস্ত সূত্রে প্রাপ্ত এই কল রেকর্ডের মারফতে জানা যায়, ভিন্ন রাজনৈতিক মতাদর্শের সেনা কর্মকর্তাদের পক্ষ নেয়ায় ভারতীয় গোয়েন্দা সংস্থা র'এর সাথে জড়িত সন্দেহভাজন এক ব্যক্তির কাছে তৎকালীন (২০২১ সালে) প্রিন্সিপাল স্টাফ অফিসার (পিএসও) লেফটেন্যান্ট জেনারেল ওয়াকার-উজ-জামান (বর্তমানে সেনাপ্রধান) এর বিষয়ে কিভাবে বিষোদগার করছিলেন সে সময়ের সামরিক গোয়েন্দা মহাপরিদপ্তর (ডিজিএফআই) মহাপরিচালক মেজর জেনারেল (পরবর্তীতে লেফটেন্যান্ট জেনারেল ও সম্প্রতি অকালীন বাধ্যতামূলক অবসর প্রদান) মোঃ সাইফুল আলম। ২০২১ সালের সামরিক কর্মকর্তাদের পদোন্নতী বোর্ড পরবর্তী এই কথোপকথনে বেশ স্পষ্টতই সাইফুল আলম একজন চাকরীরত সেনা কর্মকর্তা হওয়া সত্বেও তার সিনিয়র কর্মকর্তা ওয়াকার-উজ-জামানের বিষয়ে সামরিক বাহিনীর স্পর্শকাতর তথ্য প্রদান ও তিরস্কার করছিলেন। তিনি তাঁকে স্বাধীনতা বিরোধী শক্তির সাথে জড়িত বলে কটাক্ষ করেন। ডিজিএফআইয়ের মত একটি অত্যন্ত স্পর্শকাতর সংস্থার প্রধান হয়েও লেফটেন্যান্ট জেনারেল (অবঃ) সাইফুল আলম বিদেশী গোয়েন্দা সংস্থার সাথে সম্পর্ক আছে বলে সন্দেহ করা হয় এমন এক ব্যক্তির সাথে যোগাযোগ স্থাপন করে বেশ গর্হিত অপরাধ করেছেন বলেই প্রতীয়মান হয়। একটু ভালো করে শুনলে বুঝতে পারবেন টেলিফোনের অপরপ্রান্তের ওই ব্যক্তি প্রতিটি তথ্যের নোট নিচ্ছিলেন। এছাড়াও, এই কথোপকথনে আরো পরিস্কার প্রমাণ পাওয়া যায় যে, সাবেক প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার সাথে আত্মীয়তার সম্পর্ক থাকলেও সেনাপ্রধান জেনারেল ওয়াকার-উজ-জামান অন্যায়ের বিরুদ্ধেই সব সময় অবস্থান গ্রহণ করেছেন, এবং নিজের মতামত প্রকাশ করতেও কোন অপারগতা প্রকাশ করেননি। ঠিক একইভাবে দেশের ক্রান্তিলগ্নে এই সেনা কর্মকর্তা ছাত্র-জনতার আন্দোলন সমর্থন করে সত্যের পথেই হেঁটেছেন বলেই আমার অভিমত। আমি ব্যক্তিগতভাবে মনে করি, ছাত্র-জনতার বিপ্লবের পরবর্তী সময়ে সকল প্রতিষ্ঠানের মত সেনাবাহিনীতেও সংস্কার নিয়ে কার্যক্রম চলমান রয়েছে। যেহেতু সেনাবাহিনী একটি সুশৃংখল সংস্থা, সে কারণেই সংস্কার করতে একটু সময় লাগছে, এটা বাস্তবতা। এছাড়াও, আরেকটি বিষয় আমাদের বিবেচনায় নিতে হবে সেটি হচ্ছে বিপ্লব পরবর্তী সময়ে খুব বেশি সময় সেনাপ্রধান হাতে পাননি। ফলশ্রুতিতে, চোখে পড়ার মতো সংস্কার এখনো দৃশ্যমান হয়নি। কিন্তু আমার জানামতে সেনাবাহিনীতে নিম্নে বর্ণিত সংস্কার কার্যক্রম চলমান ক। রাজনৈতিকভাবে বঞ্চিত অফিসারদের ক্রমান্বয় পদোন্নতির আওতায় আনা হয়েছে। খ। রাজনৈতিক বিবেচনায় ও গুম খুনের বিরোধিতার জন্য সেনাসদস্যদের প্রদত্ত হয়রানি মূলক শাস্তি বাতিল করার জন্য ইতোমধ্যে সেনা সদরে একটি পর্ষদ গঠন করা হয়েছে। গ। সৈনিকদের ডিএ বিল বৃদ্ধি, FRA বৃদ্ধি, অবিবাহিত অফিসারদের বাড়ি ভাড়া প্রাপ্তি, চাকরি ৭ বছরের আগে ট্রাস্ট ব্যাংকের লোন সুবিধা এবং সৈনিকদের বাসস্থান বৃদ্ধি ইত্যাদি কার্যক্রম প্রক্রিয়াধীন। নিঃসন্দেহে সাম্প্রতিক সময়ে কিছু গুরুত্বপূর্ণ পদে পদায়ন নিয়ে প্রশ্ন উঠেছে। আমি নিশ্চিত সেনাবাহিনী প্রধান বৈদেশিক সফর শেষে উক্ত পদায়নসমূহ পুনঃ বিবেচনা করবেন এবং সেনাবাহিনীতে চিহ্নিত খুনি ও দুর্নীতিগ্রস্ত সেনা কর্মকর্তাদের বিরুদ্ধে কার্যকরী ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণ করবেন। বিশেষ দ্রষ্টব্য: কথোপকথেনে নানু শব্দটি সম্ভবত শেখ হাসিনার কোড নেইম হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে। এখানে জামাত শিবিরের পক্ষে কথা বলার জন্য আবার আপনারা সেনাপ্রধান কে জামাত শিবির বানিয়ে দিয়েন না। প্রকৃতপক্ষে সেনা প্রধান যে কোন বঞ্চিত বা যোগ্য ব্যক্তির পক্ষে রাজনৈতিক মতাদর্শের থেকে প্রফেশনাল ক্যাপাবিলিটি কে গুরুত্ব প্রদান করে থাকেন।

So far, Prothom Alo Bangladesh’s newspaper of record, has been able to verify the deaths of 203 protestors during the carnage by Sheikh Hasina’s henchmen. But the total number of fatalities is many times more. I have received reports from trustworthy sources that the police have taken away dead bodies from hospitals along with CCTV footage and death registers, so there is no record of those deaths. (And in places where they have been unable to do so, they are warning the hospital authorities not to mention the fatalities or deny receiving any patient with bullet wounds.) The police are burying some of those hijacked dead bodies in Rayer Bazar Intellectuals Graveyard, an expansive but unsought-after cemetery in Dhaka. In this clip, 36 unmarked graves can be seen in that cemetery. Those graves were dug out between Friday late night and Tuesday night. The bodies came from Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital, Dhaka Medical College and Hospital and Mitford Hospital. The graveyard staff are saying that they have never seen so many unidentified corpses in their life (except massive accident/natural disaster). The lengths this butcher of Bangladesh will go to hide her sins!
