“The big mistake of Oslo was that the vision was short-term... We should have put all the issues on the table and resolved it once and for all.” That’s what Ofer Bronchtein—French President Emmanuel Macron’s envoy for Israeli-Palestinian affairs—told me in our interview at The Jerusalem Post studio in Jerusalem. Here’s the twist: I grew up in the 1990s demonstrating against people like him. The Oslo Accords were a red line in my community—seen as dangerous, naïve, even suicidal. Bronchtein wasn’t just on the other side of the political map; he helped draw it. He was part of the Rabin government, sent Israeli delegations to meet Yasser Arafat in Tunis, and still believes, to this day, that peace is possible. He now admits Oslo failed. Not just because of Rabin’s assassination, but because the plan lacked long-term vision. “We should have resolved everything at once,” he said—borders, refugees, Jerusalem. No more half-steps. And yet, he hasn’t given up. He calls his new idea “Peace Differently”—a model based on good neighborly relations first, peace agreements later. Idealism rebranded? Maybe. But he insists the day after this war must look different, or we’re doomed to repeat history. Bronchtein also offered harsh words for Jews who cozy up to far-right European parties out of convenience or fear: “Racism is racism,” he said. Full stop. He drinks coffee with settlers, debates with Palestinians, and insists on talking to anyone who might have an idea for peace—even if it makes people uncomfortable. Including me.
