Here’s a perfect example of this — notice when he receives the ball, the Benfica player immediately rushes to press Pedri. A one-touch pass there would’ve put Pedri in a really tough spot, but De Jong fixes the issue by taking three extra touches, forcing the Benfica player to step back and cover the space, instead of pressing Pedri. That slight delay gives Pedri more time on the ball to decide his next move. The entire buildup started from De Jong holding the ball.

Lamine ankle stability is what makes him so fast in the first 5-10 metres or from a standing start. Because his ankles are so stable, he can delay his push-off until he's in the correct or best posture. That extra half a second is so crucial for his hips and torso to align properly. Most players can't wait, which means they have to run in a very compensated posture—and that either makes them slow or leaves them off balance. But for Lamine, that delay gives him elite postural control and speed.
