Let’s talk about RIR, or reps in reserve. I... felt like I could get 1 more at 4 reps, yet dug deep and got almost 3 more. If I had Dorian Yates yelling at me, I could have probably gotten 10 more. The issue with these arbitrary rules like RIR and RPE is they don’t account for the mental aspect of lifting. Hence why, since I’m obviously not as smart and awesome as “the science” community and my pro card was a fluke, and I certainly can’t read studies or even the menu at IHOP, I just go until I can’t do another full rep with decent form. Most people train like p*ssies already. Imagine trying to have someone soft as charmin guess how many reps they have left at 4 reps in. Stop overthinking it. But it was intentional. Modern games are terrified of frustrating you. They want you to feel like a god without any friction. But GTA 4 does the exact opposite. It constantly fights you. Take Roman. The "let's go bowling" meme is legendary because players hated it. But technically, it’s genius. It perfectly captures how exhausting it can be to deal with family responsibilities. You never really have any time that's just yours. Same goes for driving. Cars handle like boats. You can't just hold down the gas like you do in GTA 5. You have to respect the weight, brake early, and actually learn the streets. Rockstar used frustrating gameplay to put you directly in Niko’s shoes. The "American Dream" in GTA 4 isn’t a power fantasy playground, and you aren't a superhero in the city. You're just a stranger forced to adapt to it. When a game frustrates you, it's usually just bad design. But when GTA 4 makes you rage at a toll booth or sigh at a poorly-timed phone call, it’s doing exactly what it meant to.
