The new book 'Apple in China' makes the reckless... claim that Apple is a/the primary vehicle for training China's skilled workforce. Let's take a gander at reality for scale. Chinese universities graduate 3.7 million STEM grads each year. And China produces 12 million university grads per year, with little to no student debt. Specialized Secondary Vocational Schools produced 17.8 million grads in 2022. 1,521 higher vocational colleges graduate 5.46 million students annually. At best, Apple provided training for 472,000 people in China each year since 2008. 12 million university grads plus 17.8 million secondary vocational grads, plus 5.46 million higher vocational colleges grads is 35,260,000 skilled workers entering the workforce each year. Add Apple's 472,000=35,732,000. This means that each year since 2008, Apple has contributed about 1.32% of China's skilled workforce. So, no. Apple's contribution isn't massive.
