During training, you visit many of the facilities that... will eventually play a role in your mission. Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39A was one of them. This visit felt different. Standing at the base of the tower and looking up, I was reminded that this is the very place from which Neil Armstrong and his crewmates began their journey to the Moon. The facility has evolved over the decades and has been modernized for a new era of spaceflight, but it still carries the weight of its history. You can feel it. Then there is the elevator. Inside, there are only two buttons: Earth and Space. A simple design choice, perhaps, but one that feels remarkably profound when launch day finally arrives. What you see here is me at the top of the launch pad, with the Falcon 9 yet to make its way out. The rocket is transported to the pad horizontally and then raised to a vertical position before launch. Standing there, it was impossible not to imagine the events that would soon unfold. Check out this video that has the horse in... the gate at 3/2 and 6/5 just a few steps later. That’s a drop of nearly 30 percent a few seconds into a race. Every loser felt like a loser. So did most winners. People who have accepted being victims or who actually come to the defense of CAWs by blaming others for not seeing the odds drops coming….. I’m just not with you. This stuff is exhausting, frustrating and very tough to deal with. Most important, it is unnecessary and doesn’t have to be this way. Imagine trying to dutch bets to equalize outcomes. I understand that I should use what I believe final off odds will be as opposed to the actual live tote board (not easy to do when acting directly against what your eyes are seeing). That’s an incredible leap of faith to plan on a 30 percent odds drop the moment the horses leave the gate (assuming that info could be gleaned from the will pays and other pools). This situation sucks. My best defense remains to bet fewer races, keep to tournaments more than regular cash play, and plan for the worst every time, but the better solution remains with the racetracks (who don’t seem to be in a hurry to upset their top customers).show more

Iran launches symbolic missile attack against Israel, which retaliates... strongly After Iran launched a symbolic attack against Israel in protest against the attacks on Beirut, hours later it was Israel's turn to retaliate, this time indeed with violence and hitting more than 10 targets in Iran, including Tehran airport and Tehran, Isfahan, Tabriz, Kermanshah, Karaj, and some other areas in western Iran. Israel used air-launched ballistic missiles from Iranian airspace and also dared to launch cruise missiles from ships stationed in the Mediterranean. The White House said the US had no part in the attack; however, strangely, American tanker planes were seen in the air. Refueling whom? It wasn't my motorcycle. There are two questions at this moment: One is that since the Iranian retaliation did not hit targets in Israel in a significant way, it is very likely that Iran still has a serious problem with the refurbishment and upgrade of its long-range missiles. And the other is that perhaps the US has not only reinstated THAAD radars and others but also added more batteries brought from Asia that were positioned in advance in the corridors. Be that as it may, the current situation forces Iran to retaliate and show that it possesses real means of inflicting damage on Israel. There will be no ceasefire in Lebanon in the way Iran desires, simply because Israel saw the quantity of missiles that Hezbollah accumulated in a short period of time and will not allow that again. Israel has its own agenda, its own interests, and they are completely antagonistic to the peace plan that has been discussed. Trump is trying to save his political skin, but Netanyahu will impose his agenda and Trump will be dragged along by it. But while Trump isn't dragged along, Iran seems to be wanting to settle scores with Israel, launching a new wave of missiles along with Yemen, which, by all accounts, has also decided to launch missiles against Israel. China has become the second country in the world... with an orbital-class launcher system with first-stage booster recovery through controlled reentry and propelled landing. After delivering its payload to low Earth orbit, The Long March 10B had its booster landing on a recovery ship in the South China Sea with a net-and-hook system. SpaceX has more than a decades lead on the Chinese, with Starship being at a completely different position in this space race but the Chinese are clearly going to be putting a lot of effort into trying to catch up. It’s remarkable that the Europeans have been so slow to start experimenting with these technologies. ESA and ArianeGroup have been slow off their feet and both the Themis and Callisto programs are still very far from pulling off what the Chinese did today and miles and miles away from being able to do what SpaceX does.show more

The Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory has been hunting gamma-ray bursts the most powerful explosions in the universe since 2004. It’s still working perfectly, but Earth’s atmosphere has been slowly dragging it down toward a fiery reentry. Now, NASA is turning to a commercial company to save it. Katalyst Space Technologies’ robotic spacecraft Link will launch later this month, rendezvous with Swift, dock with it, and boost the telescope into a higher, safer orbit extending its life by years. Why this matters: • It’s the first time a private spacecraft will perform an orbital boost on a U.S. government science satellite • Swift remains one of the best tools we have for studying gamma-ray bursts and other high-energy cosmic events • Without this mission, the telescope could have deorbited as early as this year • It shows how commercial space companies are now capable of performing complex servicing missions that were once only possible for governments The deeper implication: We’re entering a new era where valuable scientific infrastructure in orbit doesn’t have to be considered disposable.
