For example, AMD's rocprof-trace-decoder is still completely closed source currently despite repeated requests for months by ML community members such as George Hotz, who is a daily AMD GPU end user. On the same June Spotify podcast, Tobias Macey & AMD's Anush Elangovan (who has a new twitter pfp) said that "open source allows for innovation to go at the pace at which the people using [AMD] want to, right, and it's not limited by the ability of what we put out in closed source form". Dear Andrej Karpathy, Update on this. Earlier this month... The Innovation Game (𝔦, 𝔦) announced a new SOTA routing algorithm had been collaboratively developed and submitted to The Innovation Game. The algorithm demonstrated the largest single perfomance jump in the modern history of the field on standard academic benchmarks: This success is a powerful proof of concept. I believe the wider implications will also interest you. As you know, the "Source" in AI is algorithms and data. These algorithms are typically for "hard to solve but easy to verify" problems. Remarkably, this allows the creation of a market for pricing improvements to these algorithms (roughly, the market is created by "racing" the algorithms, to see which can produce proof-of-work fastest). Availability of a market mechanism means open development of the algorithms can be funded by capturing a portion of the value they generate, and allocating it back to algorithm developers. The allocation is efficient, naturally integrating information (such as hardware availability) through revealed preferences. Importantly, market allocation is also "impersonal", which mitigates the risk to community cohesion that has historically afflicted Open Source projects offering monetary reward. Note: That a market for pricing code could extend Open Source to areas requiring monetary reward was (as far as I know) first suggested by Eric Raymond in 1999 Eric S. A major question in multimodal modeling is how to... leverage strong pre-trained models, such as industry-scale LLMs and VLMs, during training to avoid starting from scratch. This is important as the demand for rich and domain-specific multimodal models continues to increase, while training them from scratch is obviously impractical due to limited data and compute. The so-called “any-to-any” multimodal models can model a large diverse dictionary of modalities. That’s good. Their downside is that their architectures are often not decoder-only, which has limited their performance in practice and prevents them from leveraging strong pre-trained decoder-only models as priors. We are releasing MODUS (ICML Conference '26) a decoder-only any-to-any multimodal model to address some of these questions. A single transformer decoder predicts any modality from any others with no modality-specific heads, losses, or task pipelines. We show efficient adaptation of established models, e.g., BAGEL, to rich any-to-any multimodal modeling. We are releasing 14B to 77B parameter models. All materials are open-source. We are deeply concerned by the recent actions of the National Medical Commission National Medical Commission regarding the new policies affecting Foreign Medical Graduates #FMGs . Despite multiple attempts by #FMGs to engage in constructive dialogue about these policies, the doors have been closed to them, leaving many feeling unheard and marginalized. Key Issues Highlighted: 1.Lack of Engagement with FMGs: •When FMGs approached the NMC to discuss the recent circulars impacting their education and career pathways, they were met with a closed door. This lack of openness contradicts the NMC’s stated commitment to inclusivity and transparency. •On other occasions, the NMC has publicly invited dialogue with medical professionals on various issues. The exclusion of FMGs from such conversations suggests a discrepancy in how different members of the medical community are treated. 2.The Need for Authentic Communication: •Effective policymaking requires genuine engagement with all stakeholders. This paper has quickly become the "first paper to read in 2026" for many in the community. That said, this paper introduces significantly more terminology than their earlier papers, and I’m not entirely sure who the intended audience is.
