BOOMSHAKALAKA Another successful long-range #spaceweather forecast completed ✅ On... July 30th a 1.9 m-class solar flare exploded from AR4492 with an unusually Earth-directed coronal mass ejection and triggered a S1 radiation storm in < 2 hours (which we are still in), the first S1 radiation storm since May 26th, one day before I issued my long-range #swx forecast (synchronicity) for this timeframe of end of July/Early August based on precisely geometric heliocentric planetary geometry. There is also strong evidence this was jointly triggered by a sundiving comet to that sector of the Sun under the influence of a Jupiter Cazimi. Considering how the planets and comets how a notable influence over solar activity, the choice is to investigate into the phenomenon further or be left behind as science advances. No other "official" agency or outside commentator that I know of provided any guidance or was so precise.show more

Here’s your space weather report for the... week of June 5 - 11: • 1 M-class flare • 5 C-class flares • 36 coronal mass ejections • 1 geomagnetic storm (as of June 12, though another one is currently forecast for June 13) This video from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory shows the week’s activity. This week’s most powerful flare was an M1.8 on June 6, which erupts from the southeastern (lower left) region of the Sun’s disk at about 0:42 in this video. That eruption also produced a coronal mass ejection that reached Earth three days later, but the bulk of the blast was oriented to the south and east of Earth, so the effect on our planet was minimal. This new video, taken by NASA's Parker Solar Probe... during its 21st close approach to the Sun, shows a stunning view of the Solar System from inside Mercury’s orbit. It captures solar phenomena like coronal streamers, a small coronal mass ejection, and high-energy particles streaking past the camera. Visible planets include Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Earth, Mars, and Jupiter. A comet, Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, briefly appears with its tail. These observations help us understand how the Sun affects space weather, satellites, astronauts, and Earth’s power grids. Parker Solar Probe is flying closer to the Sun than any spacecraft before it, eventually reaching within 6 million kilometers of the surface. Coronal streamers are bright, plasma-filled structures from the Sun’s outer atmosphere that stretch into space. High-energy particle streaks are due to solar energetic particles hitting the camera, essentially, you're watching radiation in real time. Tsuchinshan-ATLAS is a recently discovered comet, and its tail’s appearance in the video is a rare, spectacular moment. Here was the last planetary alignment shown in the... coronagraph similar to the upcoming sequence early Jan 2026. Four planetary conjunctions in quick success with a comet impact as well and just afterwards a G4 geomagnetic storm hits Earth from some BIG CMEs. Notice the sunspot number increase from Oct to December 2006, a 4x increase!! Venus and Mars perform a double Cazimi and get some initial activity going as seen by the faint full halo CMEs (oct. 22-23, 31st). Then the comet impact (11/3-11/4 being another great example of a CME directly following a comet impact to the Sun) and Mercury's inferior conjunction further spice things up. Just as Jupiter goes Cazimi CME start blasting off like crazy from the western limb (left side) and then when they rotate Earth-direct BOOMSHAKALAKA. Solar Storm impacts at 900 km/s immediately sending Earth into G4 conditions for 6 hours. When you have the space weather, planetary geometry, and geophysics skillsets, the connections are clear as day to see.show more

A minor geomagnetic storm is possible tonight, which may produce auroras visible from the northern United States. The source is a coronal hole that has aligned with Earth. Coronal holes are darker, lower density regions on the Sun where fast solar wind escapes. We talked more about them in a post last month!show more

Our Sun and Earth have finally calmed down and... we are back to low level solar storms and some minor fast solar wind. Here is a nice 4-day view of the Sun from SUVI in 284 Angstroms with the latest GONG magnetic field line model overlay. Old region 4274 is still up to its tricks, firing off the last big flare before rotating off the west limb, and later, launching another storm on the farside! For us, right now we are still getting a little fast wind from a northern coronal hole but that will wane over the next 24 hours. Expect another pocket of fast wind from the coronal hole passing center disk to arrive in about 3 to 4 days. Outside of that, conditions are reasonably calm Earthside, even with the new regions rotating into view in the southeast. Cannot say the same for the farside though!show more

A coronal mass ejection last week reached Earth on May 15, triggering a minor geomagnetic storm and leading to aurora sightings across the northern U.S. On May 20, SDO's Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) paused normal science operations for a series of routine calibration maneuvers — measurements that keep the instrument's magnetic field and Doppler velocity data scientifically accurate. The question we need to ask ourselves isn’t whether... the war continues or whether there’s an agreement. In my opinion, if we look a little further ahead than, say, a day or two, the question is: Will this war end with an agreement or a unilateral ceasefire? It must be said that there is a very interesting development behind the scenes, which is that Hezbollah is pleading with the Iranians that any agreement or ceasefire—even a unilateral one, which is, of course, just a phrase, as there is always some sort of coordination behind the scenes—will also include an end to Israeli fire on Hezbollah. That is what Hezbollah is telling Iran. Israel, on the other hand, is telling the United States that there is no chance of that happening—it will not happen—because Israel’s strategic goal in 2024 was to sever the links between the Gaza and Lebanon fronts, and it succeeded in doing so, and its strategic goal in the Lebanon sector in 2026 is to sever the Tehran and Beirut sectors. To the extent that Israel does this—separating the octopus from its tentacles, or the lizard from its tail, whichever animal metaphor one prefers—it is a significant success on the path to the goal of simply strangling Hezbollah, and therefore this is a very significant point of contention.show more

The highlight this week is a stunning M8.1-class flare and post-flare arcade beginning at about 0:26. Post-flare arcades are the series of loops of solar plasma that form right after a flare as the region cools down. Post-flare arcades allow us to watch the Sun's magnetic field restructure itself after an intense energy release. Plus, they're beautiful! 🤩 At about 2:27, the Sun starts shaking around a bit. It's not a "sunquake" — it's an SDO calibration maneuver! By periodically "jiggling" SDO's view of the Sun, scientists can ensure the spacecraft's optics are aligned and functioning properly. Elon Musk: Everything is solar power. The rest is... noise. “The sun is about 99.8% of the mass of the solar system. Jupiter's about 0.1% and everything else is in the remaining 0.1%, and we are much less than 0.1%. So, if you burnt all of the mass of the solar system, then the total energy produced by the sun would still round up to 100%. If you just burnt Earth, the whole planet, and burnt Jupiter, which is very big and quite challenging to burn, turn Jupiter into a thermonuclear reactor, the sun is 99.8% of the mass of the solar system and everything else is in the miscellaneous category. Basically, no matter what you do, total energy produced in our solar system rounds up to 100% from the sun. You could even throw another Jupiter in, so we're going to snag a Jupiter from somewhere else, you could teleport two more Jupiters into our solar system, burn them, and the sun would still round up to 100%. As long as you're at 99.6%, you're still rounding up to 100%. Maybe that gives some perspective of why solar is really the thing that matters. And, as soon as you start thinking about things at a grander scale, like Kardashev Scale 2 civilizations, it becomes very, very obvious. I'm not saying anything that's new, by the way. Anyone who studies physics has known this for a very long time. In fact, Kardashev, a Russian physicist who came up with this idea, I think, in the 1960s, just as a way to classify civilizations, where Kardashev Scale 1 would be, you've harnessed most of the energy of the planet, Kardashev Scale 2, you've harnessed most of the energy of your sun, Kardashev 3, you've harnessed most of the energy of a galaxy. Now we're only about 1% or a few percent of Kardashev Scale 1 right now, optimistically. But as soon as you go to Kardashev Scale 2, where you're talking about the power of the sun, then you're really just saying everything is solar power and the rest is in the noise. The Younger Dryas was not a single event. Randall... Carlson argues it was bookended by two separate catastrophes - one at its onset approximately 12,800 years ago, where the proxy evidence for a cosmic impact is now substantial, and one at its termination approximately 11,700 years ago, where the picture is less clear. For the end of the Younger Dryas, Randall finds Robert Schoch's solar event hypothesis genuinely compelling. The proxy evidence for a cosmic impact at the termination is not as strong as at the onset, which leaves room for a different mechanism. What has emerged from solar observing satellites deployed in recent decades is a more dynamic and variable sun than previously modelled - one capable of producing significant coronal mass ejections and solar storms. Critically, there appears to be a correlation between cometary material falling into the sun and reactive events in the chromosphere that translate into exactly those kinds of solar outbursts. If a fragmenting comet was responsible for the onset of the Younger Dryas, the debris trail it left behind may have continued interacting with the solar system - and potentially with the sun itself - in ways that contributed to the abrupt warming event that ended it.show more

It was a relatively quiet week on the Sun, though a series of coronal mass ejections that erupted on Jan. 8 — just before this reporting period — led to a moderate geomagnetic storm on Jan. 10, with auroras intensifying across high-latitude regions including Iceland and northern Canada. SDO remains in its Earth eclipse period, so you may notice brief blackouts in the video when Earth temporarily blocks the spacecraft’s view.
