The operation, which has been ongoing for about eight years, has evolved into a highly organised criminal enterprise with multiple entry points and checkpoints. Access to the mining site is available either from Oyo State via Kishi and Igbeti or from Bani, a border town along the Kwara and Oyo State axis. Once a bike enters the forest, it must pass through seven to eight checkpoints controlled by locals who provide security for the miners. Each checkpoint charges a fee per trip, ranging from N100 to N500, while the final checkpoint leading to Daba, the hub of illegal mining, charges N2,700 per trip. With thousands of bikes operating daily, the revenue generated is staggering. Local security personnel at the N100 checkpoint alone earn over N300,000 daily. Logistics operators who do not mine but transport the minerals earn about N500,000 per truck they move out of the forest. The mining activity has been accepted by all parties involved, including locals and foreigners. The Chinese are actively participating in buying the minerals, making this a billion-dollar economy that is being illegally exploited. The Federal Government and Oyo State Government must pay urgent attention to this illegal mining operation. How Did Pi Network Build a Huge User Base... Before it Had a Fully Open Blockchain? Launched in 2019 by Stanford graduates, Pi (Pi Network) made crypto participation possible through a smartphone app instead of expensive mining hardware. But what exactly made its model different? (1) It made mining accessible through smartphones. Pi allowed users to earn Pi by checking into the app and starting a mining session. The process was designed to consume very little battery and computing power compared with traditional proof of work mining. A firewalled Enclosed Mainnet had already gone live in December 2021, giving the project a working but closed blockchain years before it opened externally. During that period, the project focused heavily on growing its user base and developing its ecosystem. This flipped the usual crypto growth model, where networks often launch first and try to attract users afterward. (5) The Open Network changed what users could actually do. With Open Network, Pi became externally connected to the broader blockchain ecosystem. Yumbe District has taken a major step in Uganda’s mineral development journey with the launch of the Euro Gold Small-Scale Mining Project, strengthening efforts to formalise artisanal and small-scale mining and promote responsible exploitation of Uganda’s mineral resources. State Minister for Mineral Development Phiona Nyamutoro said the launch demonstrates Government’s commitment to developing the mineral sector under NDP IV. She noted that Yumbe and Zombo are among gold-rich areas in West Nile and urged Euro Gold to comply with the law, create jobs and internships, support communities and progressively move into medium- and large-scale mining. She reaffirmed Government’s resolve to close illegal mining operations and called for improved safety, insurance and healthcare for miners. Euro Gold CEO Ben Feni said the company spent more than two years surveying and exploring the area before securing its mining ground. Its operations cover about 79 square kilometres across West Nile, with Yumbe as its pioneer site. The company targets production of at least 20kg of gold per week and plans to establish a processing plant to strengthen traceability and accountability. “We are going to build our nation,” Feni said. Assimwe Kenneth, CEO of the Uganda Association of Artisanal and Small-Scale Miners, commended Euro Gold and Government for supporting formalisation. He urged communities to keep children in school and out of mining, encouraged the use of PPE and called for accessible insurance schemes for small-scale miners. Tusigwire Julius, Head of the Mineral Police Unit, said the unit, established in 2017, is responsible for combating illegal mining, mineral smuggling, fraud and forced labour. He revealed that more than 15 illegal mining sites have been closed this year, while raising concern over recent deaths in illegal mining sites. Eng. Grace Nakku, from the Office of the Commissioner, Minerals and Energy Department, said responsible mining is key to attracting investment and growing Uganda’s mineral sector. Each of this checkpoint charges each bike per trip ranging from 100naira, 200,300 and 500naira while the last checkpoint which will lead you to Daba (illegal mining) charges 2,700naira per trip. And the estimated population of the bikes plying through the area is around 3000 to 5000 bikes. Which is significantly increasing, the mining which has started about 8yrs ago has been accepted by all parties both locals and foreigners including the Chinese who are actively participating in buying the minerals there. It is an organized crime and has many wings because those who do not mine but just look for logistics companies to pick up the items earn about 500,000 naira on each truck they bring forward. The local security earn more than 300,000 naira daily for those recieving 100naira as gate fee. 🚨 CATL SAYS LITHIUM-AIR BATTERIES COULD ONE DAY DELIVER... 1600+ KM RANGE WITH ENERGY DENSITY APPROACHING PETROL. The world’s largest battery maker is pushing a radical “breathing” battery technology that replaces heavy nickel, cobalt and manganese with lithium metal and oxygen pulled directly from the air. In early lab tests, researchers have already achieved around 1,200 Wh/kg more than four times today’s best lithium-ion cells. With further development, CATL believes the technology could theoretically reach ~12,000 Wh/kg, close to the energy density of petrol itself. Why this matters: • It could slash battery weight and cost dramatically • Small EVs might achieve 1,600+ km of real-world range • It removes dependence on scarce metals like nickel and cobalt • A 1,000-cycle prototype with 1,600 km range would theoretically last 1.6 million kilometres The deeper implication: Lithium-air represents one of the few battery chemistries that could genuinely match or exceed the convenience of petrol without massive compromises. If the enormous technical hurdles (moisture sensitivity, cycle life, and oxygen management) can be solved, it wouldn’t just improve EVs it could fundamentally change what’s possible for electric aviation, long-haul transport, and portable power. We’re still very early. Current prototypes are far from commercial, and most experts expect mass production only after 2030 at the earliest. But the fact that the company producing over half the world’s high-voltage batteries is seriously pursuing this shows how transformative the payoff could be.
