From above, two U.S. Army snipers saw what was happening. One of them was Gary Gordon. Gordon was part of the elite Ist Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta. He and his teammate requested permission to be inserted on the ground to protect the wounded crew. Command initially denied the request. The situation was too dangerous. They asked again. Denied. They asked a third time. Permission granted. With only their rifles and limited ammunition, they were dropped into the crash site, fully aware they would be surrounded. Their mission was simple: protect the injured helicopter pilot and crew for as long as possible. They secured the site and fought off wave after wave of attackers, buying critical time. Gordon ultimately gave his weapon to the wounded pilot so he could defend himself. Both soldiers were killed in action. The pilot survived. For their actions, Gary Gordon and his teammate became the first Medal of Honor recipients since the Vietnam War. He knew the odds. He went anyway. Sometimes courage isn't about winning. Today we remember World War II Medal of Honor... recipient Brig. Gen. Frederick W. Castle. His Medal of Honor citation reads: "He was air commander and leader of more than 2,000 heavy bombers in a strike against German airfields on Dec. 24, 1944. En route to the target, the failure of one engine forced him to relinquish his place at the head of the formation. In order not to endanger friendly troops on the ground below, he refused to jettison his bombs to gain speed maneuverability. His lagging, unescorted aircraft became the target of numerous enemy fighters which ripped the left wing with cannon shells, set the oxygen system afire, and wounded two members of the crew. Repeated attacks started fires in two engines, leaving the Flying Fortress in imminent danger of exploding. Realizing the hopelessness of the situation, the bail-out order was given. Without regard for his personal safety, he gallantly remained alone at the controls to afford all other crewmembers an opportunity to escape. Still another attack exploded gasoline tanks in the right wing, and the bomber plunged earthward, carrying Castle to his death. His intrepidity and willing sacrifice of his life to save the members of his crew were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service." Castle is buried at Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery, Belgium. We continue to honor and remember his service and sacrifice.show more

I developed this exercise to demonstrate that underneath such complexity, DFT is just a series of matrix multiplications you can calculate by hand. ✍️ Once you see that, it should not surprise you that a deep neural network, which is also a series of matrix multiplications, with activation functions in-between, can learn to perform DFT to process and analyze signals so effectively. How does DFT work? Jet made a low pass near US Navy aircraft carrier USS Essex (CV-9), flying just 50 ft above the sea, when the wingtip hit a wave that sent the bomber into a cartwheel. I was a helicopter mechanic in HS-9 at the time. When it overflew the flight deck you could feel the heat and smell at jet exhaust. After the flight deck overfly (starboard to port) he continued to fly away from the ship at low level. He gained a little altitude and started to make a left turn, leveled back out, lost altitude and just when it looked like he was going to make a controlled ditching his left wing dipped and hit the water and then he cartwheeled in a ball of flame..
