UPDATE ON APPA: K9 Appa is on the road... to recovery after being shot during that armed standoff on August 4. The dog took rounds from the suspect who had pointed a gun at a deputy and fled after contacting kids in the area. Deputies finished the threat. Appa went into surgery fighting for his life. Now the update. He had two surgeries. His prognosis is good. He’s been released from the vet and is home recovering with his handler and family. COORDINATED SEARCH EFFORT The Washoe County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) has successfully located and taken 23-year-old Chase Orput back into custody following a coordinated search after he walked away from a Washoe County Sheriff's Office inmate work crew on Monday, July 27, at approximately 1:30 p.m. On Tuesday, July 28, at approximately 1:00 p.m., deputies located Orput near Interstate 80 and the railroad tracks in the area of mile marker 21 after a citizen from a nearby business recognized him and promptly contacted the Sparks Police Department (SPD). The information provided helped direct SPD officers and WCSO deputies to his location. The SPD further assisted by deploying a drone to provide aerial support during the search, allowing WCSO deputies and Sparks Police officers on the ground to quickly locate and safely take Orput into custody. Orput was evaluated and provided medical care at the scene before being transported back to the Washoe County Detention Facility, where he will face additional escape charges. Orput was serving a 90-day sentence for misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to show or maintain proof of insurance. The WCSO extends its sincere appreciation to our regional law enforcement partners for their partnership and assistance throughout the search effort. Deputy Randy Hoppert has been identified as the person Morales senselessly shot and killed during the gunfight. Hoppert was a Navy corpsman who served from 2010 to 2015 and joined the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office on Jan. 5, 2020. He was struck by gunfire and transported to Sierra View District Hospital, where he died at 11:57 a.m. Morales had allegedly ambushed the deputies, prompting a call for additional units. According to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, two female EMS workers with the Kanawha County first noticed a suspicious person near their detachment around 2 a.m. They thought the man, later identified as Lucas, was armed with a knife and wearing what looked like a bathrobe but turned out to be a trench coat. Worried for their safety, they left the area. As the ambulance traveled along Lucas allegedly ran out from beside a building and leaped onto the hood while still believed to be armed. The crew sped off and Lucas fell off the vehicle. They then called Metro 911. Deputies located Lucas in critical condition on U.S. Route 119. Radio traffic picked up by dispatchers captured the crew reporting screams coming from under the ambulance at one point. Dispatchers told them to stop, but the vehicle kept moving for nearly two miles before it finally pulled over. The sheriff’s office says the incident remains under active investigation. The two EMS workers are on administrative leave. The Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority said it will carry out an internal review once the sheriff’s office and prosecutors finish their work. The Boulder Police Department is trying to find two... possible victims after a hit and run near the Bolder Boulder race yesterday. Just after 8:15 a.m. on Monday, May 27, bike officers contacted and stopped a driver in the Whole Foods parking lot on Pearl Street after receiving reports of a driver acting strangely at a nearby race barricade, wearing a ski mask and then running two stop signs. Despite stopping briefly and talking with officers, the driver then ignored officers’ commands and drove off. The suspect was driving a brown Ford Explorer when he struck another car in the parking lot and nearly hit a woman walking nearby before driving off. He continued driving away from officers and headed toward blocked off roads where race participants were running. Numerous officers coordinated to keep the driver from entering the racecourse and conducted a pinch maneuver to stop the car. The suspect was then taken into custody. Officers would like to speak to the owner of the vehicle that was struck and to the woman who was almost hit, who might have been an early race runner or a spectator, seen in this video clip. “We are all very thankful that these two community members appear to be okay despite what happened and that we stopped this man before he could get any closer to the race,” interim Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn said. “Crimes like this are exactly what we train for and we have been preparing for this event for months, both internally with our drone, Patrol, SWAT, K9 and Traffic teams and with our partners at CU, the Bolder Boulder, several Boulder County public safety agencies as well as community members. Facial reconstruction of a 25,000-year-old Gravettian This man was... buried together with two teenage girls—his close relatives. Barma Grande is a cave belonging to the famous Grimaldi cave complex in Liguria. The cave was first explored in 1872. Later, Abbo, a local entrepreneur, purchased it for limestone extraction. In 1884, the Frenchman Louis Julien obtained permission from the owner to conduct excavations and, after removing about 8 meters of deposits at the cave entrance, discovered the burial of a man covered with red ochre, accompanied by flint blades. The skeleton was prepared for transport to a museum; however, a dispute over the rights to the finds broke out, resulting in most of the skeleton being destroyed. Further excavations were undertaken by the cave’s owner himself, with very practical goals - to quarry stone for building a terrace under his vineyard. In February 1892, one of Abbo’s children, playing in the cave, came across human bones. The find turned out to be a triple burial of ancient humans. The discovery attracted scholars, who determined that the skeletons had likely been placed in an artificial pit. This conclusion was confirmed by further excavations in the cave. Later, the English patron Thomas Hanbury built a small museum in Grimaldi, where the three discovered skeletons were put on public display. This is the only skeletal material from Grimaldi that has remained in Italy. Barma Grande 2 (the man) lay on his back, while the two adolescents, Barma Grande 3 and 4, lay side by side on their sides, facing the cave entrance. All three appear to have been buried at the same time. The skeletons were covered with ochre, and the grave contained numerous perforated marine shells, deer canines, fish vertebrae, beads and ivory pendants, as well as extraordinarily long flint blades (Gravettian culture). Beneath the skull of BG3, who lay in the middle, was the bone of a horned animal, and beneath the occiput of BG4 was a large flint tool. The ornaments apparently once adorned their clothing. The skeletons belonged to a mature man and two adolescents aged 12–13 and 14–15. Initially, anthropologists assumed that one adolescent was a girl and the other a boy. Nearly 100 years later, skeletal analysis confirmed that Barma Grande 3 was female, but uncertainty remained regarding the second adolescent. The question was finally resolved by recent DNA analysis: both adolescents were girls. Certain features of the skull structure suggested close kinship among all three individuals. This hypothesis was confirmed by mitochondrial DNA analysis of the skeletons in 2006. The man was very tall - 188 cm, with a massive skull and robust limbs. Marked asymmetry in his arms indicated that, due to an injury, he had been forced for a long time to rely almost exclusively on his right hand.show more
