TPUs!" tweet reminded me of this quote from the Odd Lots episode with Hudson River Trading's Head of AI: "If you're using TPUs, you're also kind of entering a very close relationship with Google, some feeling of vendor lock in.. It's a complicated thing if you go down that path. But if you're compute hungry like the big labs, you'll take what you can get. I think Anthropic takes TPUs, Trainium, and GPUs, they need them all." You can also just look at the hoops and hurdles Google is going through to find external buyers of TPUs: - Invested $10B+ in Anthropic (and committed to invest $40B+) - Back-stopped Anthropic's data center leases so that Anthropic's data center developers can obtain financing to house the TPU's Anthropic is buying from Google - Created a new neocloud via a JV with Blackstone to offer TPUs (e.g. buy them from Google to rent) CoreWeave and Nebius are already sold out on the GPUs for which they have data center capacity to bring online.. So I’ve lived in Hillsboro, Oregon for 10 years.... Drove around today and tonight and shot this myself. This is what the “Data Center Plains” looks like.👇 My town sits at the end of 6 transpacific sea cables connecting the US to Asia. That’s why 30+ data centers landed here. They’re everywhere. Spread across the entire north and west end of the city. Road after road. Building after building. Miles of it. And they keep building. Pushing further west every year into farmland that’s been here for generations. Buying up land, Giving mass amounts of money to home owners to move, Tearing down homes. Tearing down historic sites. $7.2 billion in exempted property taxes. Some of these finished buildings are literally sitting completely dark… PGE told them no power for 3-5 years. They still built them anyway. A power plant is now going up right next to the data centers because they maxed the local grid. There are families still living next to construction zones. Old farmhouses directly across the street from data center walls. Nobody asked the people who already lived here. These are the families who refused to leave, so they said we are just gonna put them up next to your houses anyway. A pioneer homestead from 1865, 190 years of continuous farming is about to be gone, NTT Global Data Centers got that land tax-free until 2051. Signed in a single day at City Hall. Intel, the employer that actually brought thousands of real jobs here is laying off locals at the same time. This sound runs 24 hours a day. 7 days a week. My electricity bill went from $80 to $150. Water rates are set to increase 105% over 5 years, critics say to fund data center infrastructure, not residents. Data centers aren’t a joke. Novogratz on Galaxy's decision to lease the first 800MW of its data center capacity to CoreWeave $CRWV instead of other cloud providers such as Oracle $ORCL: "I think CoreWeave is doing an awesome job.. and we took that bet. We could have done a deal with an Oracle and we would have made a whole lot less money on it. We took a bet on a company that we saw growing at the same kind of time (line as Galaxy).. Higher risk, higher return." Important to note - Galaxy expects to have an incremental 800MW of gross power capacity available for lease in the very near future. Meanwhile, mgmt. has strongly suggested they'll seek to diversify their tenant base beyond CoreWeave. I expect Oracle to be Galaxy's next tenant, given their significant data center capacity needs stemming from their monster cloud contract with OpenAI. While Oracle likely commands a lower rental rate (e.g. pays a lower price per MW of critical IT load), the yields on CapEx for Galaxy remain attractive, and a diversified tenant base should be rewarded with a higher multiple on the overall data center business.show more
