He then turns left and collides with a British couple who were standing talking, unaware. The 41-year-old British woman suffered a broken leg. Her partner is more fortunate and sustains less serious injuries. The vehicle’s wild path angers some people in the crowd. Once they realize what has happened, they react with shouts and gestures of disapproval, and one person kicks the car involved. After several days of investigation, the authorities identified the owner of the car as a 29-year-old Palestinian resident of Heraklion. He faces a felony criminal charge. During the preliminary investigation, he had confessed that he was the driver and that he had been under the influence of alcohol. However, when he appeared before the examining magistrate in Heraklion, he claimed he was not the person driving. He said the vehicle only came into his possession 23 days before his arrest — that is, after the incident. He attributed his earlier confession to a misunderstanding caused by a language barrier.
