THE DEEP OCEAN IS BASICALLY A MYSTERY WE HAVE... ONLY SEEN 0.001 PERCENT OF IT Scientists just revealed we have explored less of the deep ocean than your cat has explored under the couch. Covering 66 percent of Earth’s surface, this underwater world remains almost entirely unseen. Only 0.001 percent has been visually documented, about the size of Rhode Island. Imagine trying to learn every animal on Earth by staring at one soccer field. That is our deep-sea data: patchy, outdated, and mostly thanks to 5 countries. The United States, Japan, New Zealand, France, and Germany filmed 97 percent of it, mostly in blurry black and white. This means our ocean knowledge is a wild guess. The Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory has been hunting gamma-ray bursts the most powerful explosions in the universe since 2004. It’s still working perfectly, but Earth’s atmosphere has been slowly dragging it down toward a fiery reentry. Now, NASA is turning to a commercial company to save it. Katalyst Space Technologies’ robotic spacecraft Link will launch later this month, rendezvous with Swift, dock with it, and boost the telescope into a higher, safer orbit extending its life by years.
