This is me speaking AGAINST the EU Migration Pact.... Sinn Féin has opposed the pact from the beginning and we will speak against it tomorrow. The EU Migration Pact is not in Ireland's interests. That is why I spoke out against it, voted against it and why we brought forward more than 50 amendments to the International Protection Bill which locked the pact in Irish law. Below is my speech during the first debate on it, two years ago, setting out why Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Greens were wrong to force this through. It is wrong to hand decision making on migration over to the EU. These are decisions that are best made in Ireland so that we have a system that is fair, managed and enforced and that people can have confidence in. The country that spent decades lecturing the world about civility, integration, and “European values” can’t even keep its own capital from burning over a budget decision. This is what late-stage governance looks like in countries that ran out of ideas. Tax everything that moves, cut services until something snaps, then send police to clean up the mess they created. Brussels today. Paris tomorrow. London the day after. The pattern keeps repeating and the same governments keep telling their citizens that everything is fine and the real danger is people moving somewhere else.
