I was visiting Goa with my wife a couple... of years ago. We were in this cosy little resort in South Goa right on Agonda beach, run by a middle aged Goanese couple. We had stayed there for three days and on the 4th day we drove to North Goa, walked into a bar and got drunk and so had to check in at a different hotel for the night. At 11:30 ish, the lady from the resort called us to check if we were okay and that she had waited up to see if we would return. I thanked her and assured her that everything is okay. I don’t think I have or will experience this anywhere else, and I am a fairly well traveled person. India, with all its follies, can sometimes give you the most heartwarming experiences. Open the hood of a transformer and the parts list is overwhelming: embeddings, positional encoding, attention weighting, self-attention, cross-attention, multi-head attention, layer norm, skip connections, softmax, linear, Nx, shifted right, query, key, value, masking. Which of those actually make the car run? Two of them. Attention weighting and the feed-forward network. Everything else is an enhancement to make it run faster and longer, which is how we got from a car to a truck, and to the word "large" in large language model. So I drew and calculated those two parts entirely by hand. Goal: push five features through one transformer block, filling in every cell yourself. 1. Given Five positions of input features, arriving from the previous block. 2. Attention matrix Let us feed all five features to a query-key module (QK) and read back an attention weight matrix, A. The details of that module are a post of their own. 3. Attention weighting We multiply the input features by A to get the attention weighted features, Z. Still five positions. The effect is to combine features *across positions*, horizontally: X1 becomes X1 + X2, X2 becomes X2 + X3, and so on. 4. First layer Let us feed all five weighted features into the first layer of the FFN. Multiply by the weights and biases. Last flight of 2025. São Paulo to London. One... final Atlantic crossing this year… This year asked more than I expected. There were extraordinary moments, stars over the ITCZ, dawn breaking across continents, the quiet privilege of a flight deck at night, but also periods that were heavy, uncertain, and quietly hard. Some of that showed. Some of it didn’t. Not everything needs to. Aviation has a way of holding a mirror up to you. On good days it amplifies confidence and joy; on tougher ones it demands humility, discipline, and support from the people around you. I leaned on that support more than once this year, colleagues, friends, family, and conversations that arrived at exactly the right moment to help me navigate life’s turbulence. Their wise counsel has kept me ‘grounded’ when needed and for this I’m extremely grateful. To everyone else who followed along, reached out, challenged me, or simply stayed for the avgeek nonsense, thank you. Genuinely. This space is often polarising but for me it’s more than photographs of aeroplanes. It became somewhere to reflect, to question, and occasionally to admit that things weren’t simple. That mattered. As the year closes, change feels close. New projects are forming. New conversations are waiting. A new book, Jumbo, launches in the early new year, and perhaps a different flight deck lies ahead, maybe a return to Boeing is on the cards. The curiosity is back, and so is the excitement. If you ask Ercan the last 2 episodes could literally be titled: “How to emotionally break Serhat in every possible way.” If you’ve been paying attention from the beginning, you would already know how his character is built. He’s someone who was never allowed to express his emotions. Yes, he was treated “better” as the heir but what does “better” even mean here? He wasn’t protected, he was programmed. Forced to suppress everything, to carry responsibility, to stay in control at all times. And that stayed with him. And when you grow up like that, you attract people who treat you the same way. That’s exactly what happened with M. She treated him in that same controlled, restrictive way. The only person who didn’t was Yıldız. From the very beginning, she saw the real him the vulnerable him. No matter how high he built his walls, she could still see through him. And that scared him. Not because he doubts her, but because he’s not used to being seen like that. Then his Ortak was shot, and he had to carry him to the hospital and operate on him while injured!(an injury that was caused my Aşir himself!) almost losing him. He broke down alone!! no one even saw that because this is how Serhat is used to be🙂‍↕️ Then he started suspecting his own brother. Then yilidz rose the gun in front of the other ağas and that’s when all the pressure and the responsibility of maintaining control and respect not just in his family, but as an Ağa, crushed him at once! Then Yıldız was jailed because of M & the next day it was confirmed that Akif shot Aşir and he discovered his betrayal with nida and hast to give his own brother to death! Because that’s what morally correct! And then Hicran First, she was someone he was supposed to protect cuz Aşir told him to protect her. Then suddenly, she is his sister. And just as quickly, she was dying. He found out his own mother was behind her suffering. He didn’t get time to process any of it. The guilt alone is enough to destroy someone. Knowing she was always there, part of his life, and he didn’t know. That he couldn’t protect her. That he couldn’t repay her. And it didn’t stop there… He lost his status. He was manipulated by M. He was pushed further and further. Then came the final blow Hicran’s brain death. And right after that, he had to face the reality of her being an organ donor.
