They make just a few cents per gallon on fuel, versus the typical 25- to 35-cent markup at most stations. Today, the national average for regular gas is around $4.40 per gallon, while Costco often sells it 10–30 cents cheaper per gallon — and sometimes more depending on the location. They actually sell way more gas overall by keeping prices low, which drives massive volume — especially when prices are high. Costco doesn’t make much profit from groceries either, selling most items at or just above cost. But the real money comes from membership fees, which account for roughly two-thirds of the company’s profit.
