Folks have asked me for a side by side... comparison the Apple eMate 300 and the AlohaSmart 3000. Well you can see they were conceived by some of the same team at Apple. They are remarkably alike. In public I get a lot of “in the know” folks ask if that is the eMate. The build quality is better of course in the eMate. But it is also 2.5 time heaver and it is hard on my hacked battery. I do carry around the eMate and use it regularly but it is mostly in my Library for contemporaneous notes. The AlphaSmart 3000 I carry a lot. Mostly in the woods. It is lighter, only 3 AA batteries and easier screen in almost all settings. The 3000 has a slightly bigger keyboard but slightly worse travel. The AlphaSmart Neo2 has a better keyboard than both.
