Colmap 4.0 was very recently released, so it inspired... me to do some work to better understand it and its new capabilities with Rerun. I want to really understand how Colmap, and in particular, pycolmap, works outside of just calling it via the CLI. So my goal is to use the low-level pycolmap API to log every part of the pipeline. The explicit goal is to have an alternative to the SQLite database that I can utilize. Instead of SQLite, I want to try logging everything directly to rerun and use RRD. This means I can have deep inspectability and still save the features/matches/2D view geometry, but be able to view it directly in rerun. I think this is one of the superpowers that rerun provides; data and visualizations are deeply integrated. As I'm often working with sequential data (videos), I'm going to specifically focus on four things: 1. Monocular Video Simple: Calls high-level APIs such as pycolmap.extract_features, pycolmap.match_sequential, pycolmap.incremental_mapping. These are basically identical to the CLI options and provide a good baseline. 2. Monocular Video Streamed: Take the above high-level APIs and break them down to their iterator version, logging each component in a streamed manner. This way, I can stream the intermediate features to rerun while the extraction/matching/mapping is happening. 3. Rig with unknown calibration: <- WHAT THE VIDEO SHOWS This is probably the most interesting version and the first one I've been working on. It allows one to set a rig between known sensors, such as in VR/AR devices, leading to much better reconstructions with multiple cameras. This is the case where we don't know the calibration a priori, so we have to run a reconstruction twice: once as a normal Colmap reconstruction with no rig constraints, use this to generate the constraints, and then do it again with the newly found rig. 4. Rig with known calibration: This is the RoboCap example, where we have a pre-calibrated set of sensors, so we don't need to run the two reconstructions and also gain better matching between cameras, both spatially and temporally. Again, this leads to a much better reconstruction! Along with all this, GLOMAP has become a first-class global mapper, making it super easy to use directly within pycolmap! I'm excited to do more with this and compare it to things like pycuvslam, vipe, and other alternatives.show more

But you know who else had some serious mobility and an NFL arm, but was slightly undersized? Seneca Wallace, which oddly enough is my comp for Pavia. This video was taken the day I played through... the first build of the Neural DSP Archetype JM X plugin. We’d set up my amp rig in the live room and were switching between the rig and the plugin. I threw every test at it; does turning the volume knob to 5 create a natural response in tone? It did. Does a single note that’s held die out without a noise gate eating it or the “math” just giving up? It did. Do two notes bent at once with distortion on create natural harmonic overtones exactly like the amps in the room? They did, exactly. I had the engineer switch between signals without my knowing. “That’s the amps,” I’d guess. “Plugin,” the engineer would say, several times. It had fooled me. Neural DSP had done it. It wasn’t just a faithful recreation of my sound - it was the first plugin I’d ever heard that proved that digital modeling could create a digital emulation with zero compromises. I’d like to say that we went back and forth countless times, making tweaks until it was right, but the truth is that they pretty much nailed it on the first try. Only a few EQ changes and some changes to a couple of the effects pedals were needed. The thousands of hours of creation came to fruition yesterday when the plugin was released, and it’s been a joy to see and hear players putting this software to the test and being as impressed as I was in this video. Thank you to every guitar player who created such clever and great sounding presets and for spreading the word. I can’t wait to hear all the new music that’s created with this plugin. Listen, I don’t know shit about fuck, but here... is my honest critique: Ditch the bag, get a good holster and belt system, carry on body. I use a Bawidamann Gotham + Viking Tatics CCW belt and inner belt all day. If you’re going to temple index, meat of the palm on your temple, not muzzle next to Tempe. That was dangerous and silly. We leave our non shooting hand free, it’s not a two handed maneuver. Shit happens. The drill should’ve been stopped immediately there and corrected. Get to cover for a reload, don’t dance around, that mag on the ground is gone, try to be cognizant of your guns condition if you’re doing an emergency reload versus topping off... You can simulate cover with a barricade/change in elevation. Try to use workspace to get it done efficiently. You still need to earn that space back when the gun is back in the fight. We fight, assess, and scan. Take cover, top off, trade up, take off, treat injuries, talk to who needs to be talked to. Deliberately and violently. You look super tense. I think it’s time to slow down and start with the fundamentals. Everything else is a distraction. The drill itself, shooting from retention, is valuable. However there is work to be done to make this applicable IMHO. Otherwise it’s fanfare. I like to start this drill with my non firing hand on my head and elbow extended to the target in a block, then a single handed draw and shooting from retention that is high and tight as possible, otherwise you risk losing that gun. If you want some real practical training, go down to AZ and hit a two day with Warlizard Tactical. In time you will see. It’s a journey, we all grow. I can’t recommend them enough. Happy Final Space Friday! Lots to update. So here’s... the thing… since I legally can’t do a digital version of the comic, I’ve been digging into a little loophole: a motion comic. Like… an actual video version of the book. Still testing it, but Daz Tibbles did a rough test and is trying a few motion poster tests with other characters. If we pull this off, it’s gonna take FOREVER but it’s possible. That’s the key word here. Possible. And maybe worth it. Over on the Color Edition, the print file’s coming together clean. The whole focus right now is threefold: 1.Resizing 2. Color matching 3.And the “Zazz Pass” (if a tweak takes under 30 minutes, I’m hitting it). I’m building a punch list and should have some before/after examples to show off next week. It’s looking really good. On the Midnight Edition, we’re building out the UV Spot File for the cover titles on the front, spine, back, and yep, the shards of glass will glint too. Gonna look sick! Just waiting on the physical samples to land at my door so I can approve it for full print run. Also printer flagged 15 pages where the text bubbles were a little too close to the cut line, so I went in, fixed them, and sent them back. And yes, I asked about international languages. It’s doable, but that’s a whole other mountain would need to re-letter the whole thing. I’m shelving that until the English versions are fully out. LLM Artifacts Connected to Andrej Karpathy's LLM Knowledge base... idea, I've been building out a fun way to generate dynamic artifacts from these knowledge bases with the goal of discovering and revealing meaningful and deeper insights. LLM KBs are hard to consume for humans, as I think they are more built for agents. So the question is, what form would be useful for humans to take actions and make important decisions? That's what I am trying to figure out with these artifacts. The artifact example shows a pulse on HN discussions around AI-related stories. The insights can go deeper, of course, but this is already super fun and thought-provoking, like some of my favorite podcasts. The format and depth matter a lot. The aggregation skills of agents are outstanding if you tune the prompts and skill carefully. I built this artifact generator in a few minutes through an agent skill, but I feel like there are so many ways that LLM-generated information can be used and consumed. Like generating deeper insights and analysis, and things that are just not feasible for humans today. The generated artifact (including its data and design) serves as reusable templates or can be updated in real-time via auomations, which is something I am also working on. It is truly an insane way to monitor and track information. Better than a newsletter. Better than newspapers. There is something about this that gets me really excited about the future of AI agents for knowledge generation and discovery. Lots of hidden gems everywhere just waiting to be discovered and acted on if the information is presented correctly. This is not perfect. The format, style/prose can be improved, but this is easy to customize via skill. You can personalize it to your liking. I feel like these dynamic artifacts are going to emerge as a strong new medium to stay on the cutting edge of things, both for agents and humans. My target is research, of course. This was just a basic example. Besides animation, I am also targeting other components like voice, videos, images, slides, etc. This space is full of opportunities to explore.
