Here is a 3D visualization of the coming solar... storm using model parameters from NASA's run, NOAA's run (shown below), and the coronagraph views from STEREO-A/COR2 and SOHO/LASCO. The storm is expected to hit Earth early December 9. The 3D visualization clearly shows the low inclination orientation of the solar slinky core inside the larger storm envelope. Of course, the earlier eruption that erupted to the northeast, might deflect this structure a little bit, but likely that will only make the structure move more towards the ecliptic plane, which will give us a larger chance of crossing through the solar slinky core. One nice thing about low inclination flux rope cores is that they almost ALWAYS have southward field in them at some point. So this is good news for aurora photographers-- as long as this solar storm stays true to its launch trajectory and inclination, we could see some organized southward pointed magnetic field. Considering this solar storm is fast-- that usually indicates the storm will not deviate much from its original launch trajectory! Here is the link to a static frame of the 3D frame visualization so you can fly around it yourself:show more

The last 2.5 days of solar activity have been... wild! A 1.1 X-Flare and about a dozen M-flares, charging the Earth with more plasma whilst plasma launched from the Sun itself will directly impact Earth in 24-48 hours... The chance of a BIG solar storm launching towards Earth now is decreasing, but if a big flare pops off from the limb we could have a significant radiation storm hit us in <1 hour.show more

What would happen if the strongest solar storm ever... recorded, the one that hit Earth 14,300 years ago, struck today, but with a nearly collapsed magnetic field like the one during the Laschamp geomagnetic excursion? Today, Earth's magnetic field is weakening, and the magnetic North Pole is racing toward Siberia at a speed comparable to the Laschamp excursion. We might be very close to a tipping point. A solar storm as strong as that Miyake event could knock out power covering 97% of global electricity demand, leaving over 6.3 billion people in the dark, and wipe out about 71% of the satellite fleet (12,000 of 16,810 satellites). That alone could lead to billions of deaths, without even counting the other effects of the geophysical event.show more

Using Grok build, now we were able to cross... the magnetosphere data (from ACE and Solar-1 satellites) which shown the magnetic field lines of the Earth .... with the BOM (bureau of meteorology Australia) magnetopause feed ------ the BOM shows the standoff distance of the edge of the magnetosphere ----- the area called the "magnetopause". Now we get to see the buffeting blasts of solar wind and charged particles when they hit Earth (coming from the sun). This then perturbs the electromagnetic field lines of Earth shown by ACE and Solar-1 -- and that vibration is carried on down to the CORE OF THE EARTH! Also added in the ability to turn off Earth (transparent) so we can see inside Earth down to the calculations most people never even get to see -- and see it get vibrated , plucked like strings on a guitar! The BOM data, as well as the ACE, and Solar-1 data are all real time, and can be set to update every 1minute to every hour! The projected trail of the magnetic field around Earth is just an approximation, but it set to also vibrate along with the BOM data showing the magnetopause compression / expansion when strong solar winds, or large particle storms hit. Simply put, summed up, using Grok we were able to rebuild the old school Japanese NICT site, make it fully 3D interactive, and add in the BOM to make a new form of data observation where both the magnetopause, and magnetosphere data are combined into one, displayed on the same screen at the same time!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Both feeds can be toggled on / off so as to view one or the other as well if the user wishes! I will release this to the public for free along with the Solar and Earthquake programs very soon!show more

Our Sun and Earth have finally calmed down and... we are back to low level solar storms and some minor fast solar wind. Here is a nice 4-day view of the Sun from SUVI in 284 Angstroms with the latest GONG magnetic field line model overlay. Old region 4274 is still up to its tricks, firing off the last big flare before rotating off the west limb, and later, launching another storm on the farside! For us, right now we are still getting a little fast wind from a northern coronal hole but that will wane over the next 24 hours. Expect another pocket of fast wind from the coronal hole passing center disk to arrive in about 3 to 4 days. Outside of that, conditions are reasonably calm Earthside, even with the new regions rotating into view in the southeast. Cannot say the same for the farside though!show more

THE WORLD IS ALMOST ENTIRELY SOLAR-POWERED ALREADY. MOST PEOPLE... KNOW THIS, BUT DON'T REALIZE THEY KNOW "I'm quite confident that the primary means of power generation will be solar As I mentioned earlier, we have to have sustainable electricity production as well as consumption It's really indirect fusion, is what it is. We've got this giant fusion generator in the sky called the Sun, and we just need to tap a little bit of that energy for purposes of human civilization What most people know, but don't realize they know, is that the world is almost entirely solar-powered already. If the Sun wasn't there, we would be a frozen ice ball at 3 degrees Kelvin. The Sun powers the entire system of precipitation; the whole ecosystem is solar-powered I'm confident that solar will beat everything hands down, including natural gas. It must, actually. If it doesn't, we're in deep trouble No, we actually are. You can buy a solar system or you can lease a solar system. Most people choose to lease The thing about solar power is that it doesn't have any feedstock or operational costs. So once it's installed, it's just there. It works for decades; it'll work for probably a century Therefore, the key thing to do is to get the cost of that initial installation low and then get the cost of financing low. Those are the two factors that drive the cost of solar. We've made huge progress in that direction, and that's why I'm confident we'll actually beat natural gas"show more

Machine-Gun Sun! More than 5 storms on their way... to Earth and 3 of them offer good chances for aurora views. NOAA and NASA model predictions do not show all the storms yet (it's hard to keep up with the rapid-fire storm launches!) but the first should hit before noon July 3 UTC. Once they hit, expect G2+ level conditions, if the magnetic orientation of the storms are conducive for aurora. The NASA model is a composite showing several sets of storms lasting through July 6 UTC. My 3D solar storm visualizer runs are available for these events. I will post links for them momentarily.show more

Understanding Tonight’s Solar Storm and What It Means A... G5 is the top of the scale, the kind of solar storm powerful enough to light up the skies across half a continent and, in extreme cases, mess with the infrastructure that quietly runs our world. It’s not science fiction; it’s space weather, and it’s happened before. Back in 1989, a storm of this strength knocked out power to six million people in Quebec for nearly a day. Go further back to 1859, the famous Carrington Event and you get telegraph wires bursting into flames and aurora visible in the Caribbean. On that scale, tonight’s storm doesn’t look apocalyptic, but it’s still serious. Right now, the readings have hit what’s considered a G4 to borderline G5 level. That means the Earth’s magnetic field is being hit hard by a burst of solar plasma and what scientists call a coronal mass ejection. Essentially, the Sun hurled a cloud of charged particles at us, and when it collides with our magnetosphere, it compresses it like a drum. Those magnetic fluctuations induce currents that can run through anything long and conductive…power lines, pipelines, satellites, even the ground itself. That’s why space weather alerts always talk about power grids and communication systems. Modern infrastructure is built to handle volatility, but not cosmic scale volatility. Grid operators are already shifting load and monitoring for those geomagnetically induced currents that caused so much trouble in 1989. Satellite operators are doing the same…tweaking orbits, rotating hardware, reducing exposure. The idea is to ride it out rather than resist it. For the rest of us, the biggest impact is aesthetic, aurora could be visible much farther south than usual, maybe as far as the Gulf states if conditions hold. It’s one of those rare nights where a solar event becomes a cultural one. But it’s also a quiet reminder of how thin our technological skin really is. A strong enough storm can reach across space and touch systems that feel untouchable like our grids, GPS, communications, even financial networks. The storm is expected to peak overnight into November 12, and while it likely won’t reach the catastrophic intensity of 1859 or even 1989, it’s strong enough to make the world pause and look up. For a few hours, the same force that powers life on Earth, the Sun itself becomes unpredictable again. Right now it’s a light show. But it’s also a humbling one. Every now and then, the universe reminds us that we’re not in control of as much as we think, we’re just living inside the weather system of a star. 🎥 Here’s actor Dennis Quaid talking about what a worst case scenario could look like if a truly massive solar storm ever hit.show more

🚨“The Chinese, who manufacture virtually all of our solar... panels…have been installing cellular radios inside the inverters, which can act as kill switches," says Michael Shellenberger "There was actually a Chinese solar company that turned off the solar panels and sent up a little message to its users, saying: we've turned this off because these solar panels are only authorized to be used in certain countries. …So we know that the Chinese solar companies—all of which essentially can be used as arms of the Chinese military…they are able to to switch off large amounts of solar. And if you are able to do that, then you are able to cause the de-powering and blackouts of the grid. How big of a problem is this? …I think most national security experts view this as something that the Chinese could do if there was, for example, an invasion of Taiwan, and the United States decided to defend Taiwan. The Chinese could potentially trigger blackouts in the United States and Europe. As crazy as that sounds, that is the reality."show more

Elon Musk: Solar is already the source of the... vast majority of Earth's energy. “A lot of people would say, well solar, can that really provide the energy that we need? A lot of people don't perhaps appreciate that solar energy is already the source of the vast majority of Earth's energy. Without solar power, we would be a frozen ice ball at about 3 or 4 degrees above absolute zero. So really, all we're talking about for solar electricity is taking the tiny, tiny bit of energy that humanity needs for electricity, which I emphasize is super tiny compared to the amount of solar energy that hits the Earth. You could generate all the electricity that the United States needs with about a 100 mile by 100 mile grid of solar power. So you just take like a corner of Arizona, and that would be all the energy that the United States needs.” From: / Youtube, December 4, 2011show more
