Some people say it’s “time to let him go”... because caring for him has become difficult. His name is Buddy. He’s 16 years old and lives with Canine Cognitive Dysfunction — something like dementia in dogs. His body still works well, but his mind feels like a maze he can’t find his way out of. Several times a day, Buddy wanders into the corner of the living room behind the armchair. He faces the wall and just stands there. Somewhere along the way, he forgets how to turn around. Backing up doesn’t seem to exist in his world anymore. So he remains there, trembling slightly, confused by a space that isn’t actually trapping him. When that happens, I don’t get upset. I set my coffee aside, walk over, and gently place my hands on his hips. Then I slowly turn his stiff little body around so he’s facing the open room again. The moment he sees the space in front of him, his tail starts wagging. Just like that, the confusion disappears and he walks away happily, as if nothing ever happened. It takes maybe ten seconds of my day. Buddy spent years of his life bringing me my shoes, watching over the house, and quietly sitting beside me through hard days. If his final months mean I have to help turn him around so he can find his way again, then I’m more than willing.
