Facial reconstruction of a 6,000-year-old woman(?) from Yondaedo, South... Korea Yondaedo is a small island situated among the islands off the southern coast of South Korea and is administratively part of Tongyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do. At Yeongo-ri village on Yondaedo, the National Jinju Museum conducted four rounds of excavations of a shell midden between 1988 and 1992, recovering 15 buried skeletons and a small number of scattered skeletal remains from earthen-pit graves. These remains date to the Early Neolithic period (4th millennium BC). Due to the nature of the overlying shell layers and soil conditions, many of the individuals were poorly preserved. Although the scope for osteometric analysis was limited, several interesting observations were made (Ogata 1998). The skull designated as Individual No. 5 (reconstructed individual) was sufficiently intact for measurement. The Jinju National Museum excavated the remains and sexed the individual as female. However, some anthropologists have expressed doubts regarding the exact sex of the individual. Ogata et al. agreed with the female sexing, although with some caution. The No. 5 specimen exceeds Jomon-period individuals in both maximum cranial length and breadth; however, its cranial index of 80.4 places it at the lower end of the brachycephalic range.
