I will never forget the first time I walked... into St Peter's Basilica... None of it is painted. Everything overhead that appears to be a fresco is a mosaic: millions of small glass tiles, cut and set into place by hand. Michelangelo pierced the drum with sixteen windows, and beneath them runs a band of text, black on gold: TU ES PETRUS ET SUPER HANC PETRAM AEDIFICABO ECCLESIAM MEAM. "You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church." From the floor it reads like an ordinary inscription but each of those letters is two metres tall... Above the windows the dome divides into sixteen segments, and within them six tiers of figures rise in rings: the popes buried in the basilica, then Christ, the Virgin Mary, St John the Baptist and the Apostles, then angels carrying the instruments of the Passion, then the faces of cherubim and seraphim. Above all of them, a blue sky scattered with gold stars, and at the summit, in the lantern, God the Father. The man who designed it, Giuseppe Cesari, was a painter. Between 1603 and 1612 he produced sixty-five life-size cartoons setting out the whole scheme, and every one of them was then translated into glass by mosaicists. The reason is actually pretty unglamorous. The basilica was damp, and candle smoke and incense from centuries of liturgy were eating the pictures alive. So the Vatican began converting the building into glass, dome by dome, and from the end of the 1600s the painted altarpieces too, one at a time. By the basilica's own reckoning, around ten thousand square metres of mosaic. The workshop that did all of this is still open: twelve artists work in the Vatican Mosaic Studio today, cutting tesserae by hand in nearly 28,000 shades and fixing them with a linseed-oil stucco whose recipe has been in use for four centuries. Earlier this year its director, Paolo Di Buono, described the work: "We have the idea that we are working for something that is almost eternal."show more

That when you train your body to naturally sleep at an hour, the next day you want to sleep an hour after that? And again for the next day until the whole thing goes out of whack? The more naturally you try to adapt, the more consistent it is -- roughly a 1 hour slip each day. You're not abnormal, you've probably self-selected by reading this far. Not everyone has a 24 hour sleep cycle on this planet, even though all animals and plants have this correct circadian rhythm. A lot of us have a 25 hour sleep cycle. This fact has been buried in peer review with fake "new results", but the initial paper that verified this is perfectly valid. I am talking about the Aschoff-Wever bunker experiments that spanned 20 years and consistently turned up with the same result for the self-selecting participants: A ~25 hour sleep cycle. The moment you try to replicate this with the general public it'll smooth over a bimodal distribution. Some people have a circadian rhythm synchronised to Earth. The rest of us? We seem to be synchronised closer to Mars, which has a 24.7 hour day cycle. How can this be? I'll leave that question to you my sleepy oomfies. As for me, I bid you goodnight. 💙show more

In the legends of the Hopi, there are stories... about beings called the Ant People. These beings are said to have lived underground and helped the Hopi during times of great danger. One of the main stories says that during earlier worlds, when disasters like fire or ice came, the Ant People guided some of the Hopi into tunnels beneath the earth to keep them safe. Down there, they were given food and taught how to survive until it was safe to return to the surface. The Ant People are described as hardworking and cooperative, much like ants themselves, and they are remembered as helpers rather than rulers. The stories also say the Ant People shared knowledge with the Hopi. This included how to store food, live simply, and work together as a group. In some versions, they helped guide people between different “worlds,” which are seen as cycles of time where each world ends and another begins. These teachings are still reflected in Hopi values today, especially the idea of living in balance and preparing for hard times. The underground setting is an important part of the story, and many see it as both a real place and a symbol of protection and survival during periods when the surface world becomes unstable.show more

This is Momma Hen and she is one of... the oldest chickens we have on the farm. Each year she goes “broody” and hatches eggs we intend to keep for consumption. That’s okay because we get more hens each year without paying for any. She’s a bit quirky though - instead of keeping the chicks with the flocks, she moves them to this old coal chute built into the side of the house. This is where she’s raised them since they were first hatched. No heat lamps, weather protection by us or much else and the chicks are now growing into mature hens!show more
