A king once cursed his mountain so that no... human eye would ever see his roses again, neither by day nor by night. He forgot about the twilight... The Ladin people of the Dolomites have told this story for centuries: King Laurin ruled a hidden kingdom and kept a garden of red roses famous across the mountains. When his enemies came for him he put on a cap that made him invisible, but as he moved the roses swayed and gave away his position, and he was taken. Betrayed by his own garden, he laid a curse on it: never again, by day or by night, would anyone look upon it. But he did not think of dawn and dusk. The mountain in that story is the Catinaccio, further south. Its German name is Rosengarten. Rose garden. But the colour comes to all of them, including the peaks in this video. These are the Odle, standing over Val di Funes. Odles is Ladin for needles, which is exactly what they look like. These peaks are made of dolomite, a rock of calcium and magnesium carbonate. When the sun sits low, its light travels through far more atmosphere and loses the cool wavelengths, and the pale rock takes the warm ones and throws them back: pink, then red, then violet, then gone. The Ladin word for it is enrosadira, which means turning pink.show more
