Her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, served as a colonel in the military of Siad Barre—the very regime responsible for the genocide of the Isaaq people, one of the most severe ethnic exterminations in modern African history. From roughly 1987 to 1989, the Barre government waged a deliberate campaign against Isaaq civilians: mass executions, aerial and artillery attacks, widespread displacement, the razing of villages, rape, landmines, and other atrocities. Entire cities were reduced to rubble, and whole communities were erased. In a genocidal system, a military colonel is not a passive observer. He follows orders, enforces genocide, and understands exactly what he and the state are doing, as did those Nazis the Jewish state hunted down and brought to justice.
