Which is the inner dimension? Columns of the first or rows of the second? And when you chain five multiplications together, it gets worse. The idea: represent matrices as rectangles. Shift the second matrix up and to the right. The edges that must align become obvious. The result fills in the remaining space. No memorization. You can see it. It extends to chains.
