On AEW Grand Slam Australia: Yes, the merch stand... was poorly planned out like last year. Yes, there were empty seats and some fans apparently were moved. Yes, a perhaps unwise choice was made with the booking of the first AEW match on the card IMO. But I'll say this, and you can't feel this through a phone screen, but it was such a fun atmosphere and a fun show for the most part. And my cousin (15), whose first ever live show this was, keeps talking about how cool certain spots and moments were (particularly the ladder match and crowd fighting). They made a fan out of him last night, and I just think that's pretty cool. Sure, it won't move the needle, but we were all that kid falling in love with pro-wrestling once upon a time. It's nice to see the tradition continue. So yeah, it was well done show on an emotional level, and on a wrestling level, if not entirely on a logistical level.show more

So, in essence, yes - quite evidently, the "immersive... sim" audience is too small to sustain an AAA-sized studio. That's why an imsim needs to be marketed as an action game or perhaps an RPG. Now, there are additional considerations - such as imsims being uniquely complex and a hell to make compared to boilerplate slop titles. The effort (and cost)-to-return ratio is overwhelming. It's too much for any investor looking for a quick buck. It takes a bold creator fully willing to tank a company over it to make something as great as Deus Ex or perhaps Dishonored. And a publisher/investor willing to offer that creator all the length of the rope he requires. That's why K:CD is as close to an AAA imsim as we're getting in this era of the Earth. Also, dear publishers - the humble REPO MAN here, looking like a hundred million dollars, requires only the bottom AA ranges of funding to happen. A stunning reminder of why we cannot give up... on our rivers yesterday, as I stumbled across an adult eel on the Roding for the first time, lounging in the shallows in the shade of a council tower block & within earshot of the North Circular. This now rare & magical sight used to be common, until eel populations crashed on the Roding in the 1980’s & have not recovered. Seeking to understand & reverse this population crash should surely be a key role for the governments environmental regulator, but as usual they have done nothing to improve water quality or remove barriers to eel migration. Worse, they are actively blocking my efforts to help the eel population recover. Ordinarily, baby eels (elvers) for restocking are expensive to buy. However, I managed to secure a kind donation of elvers from fishermen on the River Severn (where the elvers often get stuck behind barriers on the river). I applied for my Environment Agency restocking permit like a good boy & all they had to do to help recover eel populations on the Roding was to say yes. Perhaps predictably, my application was rejected, because there was no positive evidence that reintroducing eels to the Roding would be a good thing. Perhaps most annoyingly, my application to restock eels on the Roding was rejected because reintroducing them would interfere with the EA’s monitoring of their continued decline. I asked what would happen if I went ahead & released the elvers anyway & was told that the EA would fine me up to £50,000. Yet another example of the malevolent uselessness of the EA: obsessed with procedure, but will do absolutely sod all to actually reverse the decline in our rivers.show more

I'm sorry, but 343 got mogged judging by the reactions. You can nit at the AI video, but imagine if they spent a week polishing it rather than 5 minutes. This is a combination of 343 just not being good enough to deserve Halo and AI getting better every day. The comments are completely predictable. Every artist is defending the 343 version, not because they really thought about it, but because the perceive AI as a threat that must be taken out at all costs. Meanwhile non-artists see a lot of merit to the AI version and the potential. I see the issues with the AI version, but I bet you a few more days on the AI version, perhaps generating 3D assets with it, would end up being the clear winner. Something is broken in our Uganda Police Force. This... State Witness, a full Regional Scene of Crime Officer, showed up in court, took oath, said he had visited a murder scene with a certain police officer, Mary Mbabazi. The defense says he’s lying about having gone to the scene of crime with said police officer and at said time. A video is played showing Mary Mbabazi arriving alone. Police officer recognizes her and says yes, that’s Mary Mbabazi. He’s not anywhere in the video. It’s played for minutes before and after arrival. He confirms he’s nowhere in the video. It’s put to him by Jet John Tumwebaze that he lied. He says he didn’t lie. The video clearly shows he lied. He insists he didn’t lie. Perhaps the video recorder just edited him out. These are the Uganda Police Force officers the state wants to rely on to convict someone for murder. These are the police officers that have filled up our jails to 4 times capacity. Same police officers are being accused of back-dating police forms 17A and submitting forged documents. Police officers filed two PF17As that are alike on everything, down to placement of commas and stamps but one has extra exhibits. The witness is having a difficult time explaining why a carbon copy has different information than the original. Witness says “pens fails sometimes”. The Chief State Prosecutor tries to step in and Mr Tumwebaze, with whom they seem to have no love lost, tells him not to bother helping his (the defense’s case). He says: “why are you helping me with my case, Mr Muwaganya? You help yours. You can’t fail to help yours and help mine”. The man is only serving violence. I would not wish ill health or death on... anyone, including my enemies, unless I was genuinely in mortal fear for my own life. But let's be straight about this. Politicians can post their deepest sympathies, families can insist they were “good boys”, and social media can produce all the usual excuses. None of that means the rest of us have to rewrite reality. Driving a car at high speed the wrong way down a motorway, knowing innocent people could be coming towards you at 120 km/h, isn't normal driving and it isn't some innocent mistake. It is an extraordinarily reckless decision that could have killed an entirely innocent family. Does that mean I think they deserved to die? No. Do I take pleasure in their deaths? No. But I'm also not going to pretend that people repeatedly involved in serious criminality are “little angels” simply because they're dead. If the newspaper reports about their previous activities and encounters with Gardaí are accurate, they were far from angels. They were thugs whose behaviour should have resulted in meaningful intervention long before things reached this point. And yes, I'll use another unfashionable expression: Live by the sword, die by the sword. Not because I'm celebrating anybody's death, but because repeatedly choosing extreme risk, violence and criminality eventually has consequences. Tragically, sometimes those consequences are irreversible. Maybe I'm getting old. Maybe I'm becoming intolerant. But when I was growing up, there were consequences for our actions. Thankfully my parents never hit me, but discipline existed. We got the rod in school I can still remember it drying beside the paraffin heater and the strap was used in secondary school, although I missed most of that. I'm not suggesting we start beating children again. But where exactly did we go from discipline and personal responsibility to being terrified of telling children NO? When did participation become more important than achievement? When did allowing children to run around shops and restaurants like little maniacs become enlightened parenting? When I was young, if you behaved like that, your parents dealt with you. You quickly learned that other people existed and that your behaviour affected them. Manners and respect are free commodities. When I hear children telling their own parents to “f*** off”, I wonder what they're going to be like as adults. If that's the respect they have for the people who brought them into the world, fed them, clothed them and cared for them, what respect are they going to have for a teacher, Garda, employer or complete stranger? Then we wonder why workplaces increasingly need chill-out spaces and “mental health days” because ordinary pressures become too much. In my day we respected our bosses, did the job we were employed to do and were happy to have a job. Yes, society has changed, and some of those changes were unquestionably for the better. But removing consequences wasn't one of them. And I'm going to use another expression that will undoubtedly upset people: Feral scumbags. Because when young people are repeatedly stealing cars, carrying knives or machetes, attacking people and terrorising neighbourhoods, I'm considerably more interested in protecting their victims than finding another fashionable euphemism for their behaviour. And yes, perhaps we need to discuss bringing back industrial schools. Before somebody deliberately misunderstands that sentence, I don't mean resurrecting the religious institutions, brutality or abuse associated with parts of that system. I mean the basic principle of removing persistent young offenders from the streets and putting them into secure residential institutions with discipline, education, vocational training and consequences. If you're 16 or 17 and repeatedly terrorising a community, perhaps knowing that you're facing several years in a secure institution followed by the adult criminal justice system if you continue offending after 18 might make you think twice. Because whatever we're doing now clearly isn't frightening some of these young offenders. Young lads can apparently parade knives and machetes on social media as though they're fashion accessories. Communities are terrorised. People accumulate conviction after conviction. And I have seen an example of the attitude I'm talking about with my own eyes. I had reason to attend court in Loughrea, Co. Galway, around this time last year. There were three young offenders in the dock, one of them flanked by two prison officers. I was sitting in the public gallery immediately behind the legal teams. When this individual spotted me, he apparently decided that making disparaging remarks about me would be great entertainment. He laughed. He jeered. It was all great craic. What struck me particularly was how relaxed the whole thing appeared. He was joking with the prison officers beside him and, from where I was sitting, they appeared to be laughing along with some of it. The judge lost patience with him on two occasions. It didn't appear to bother him in the slightest. I obviously cannot know what was going through his head, but the impression he gave me was that he believed he was untouchable. What stayed with me wasn't the insults themselves. I've heard considerably worse. It was the complete lack of respect for the court, the judge and everyone around him. When the court adjourned for lunch, I couldn't resist a little dig of my own: “Where are we going for lunch? I really fancy a steak. I wonder what the prisoners get?” That wiped away some of the laughter. His response was to start shouting abuse at me, including calling me a “f*ing f**t”. Charming. I walked away thinking that if somebody can stand in a courtroom, in front of a judge, flanked by prison officers, and still behave as though the entire proceedings are a joke, what exactly is supposed to deter him when he's back outside? I doubt that scene was unique to one courtroom in Galway. And everybody waits for the inevitable tragedy. Then, when it finally happens, politicians express shock and sympathy and everyone asks how this could possibly have happened. Perhaps we should start asking that question before somebody dies. Call me old-fashioned. Call me intolerant. Call me whatever you like. I believe in manners. I believe in respect. I believe in personal responsibility. I believe in rehabilitation. And I believe in consequences. Because allowing feral scumbags to terrorise communities without meaningful consequences isn't compassion. It's abandoning their victims and ultimately abandoning the offenders themselves. Live by the sword, die by the sword. It's an old saying for a reason.show more
