On AEW Grand Slam Australia: Yes, the merch stand... was poorly planned out like last year. Yes, there were empty seats and some fans apparently were moved. Yes, a perhaps unwise choice was made with the booking of the first AEW match on the card IMO. But I'll say this, and you can't feel this through a phone screen, but it was such a fun atmosphere and a fun show for the most part. And my cousin (15), whose first ever live show this was, keeps talking about how cool certain spots and moments were (particularly the ladder match and crowd fighting). They made a fan out of him last night, and I just think that's pretty cool. Sure, it won't move the needle, but we were all that kid falling in love with pro-wrestling once upon a time. It's nice to see the tradition continue. So yeah, it was well done show on an emotional level, and on a wrestling level, if not entirely on a logistical level.show more

The one thing we absolutely know with certainty about... the Richat Structure is that there was an incredible amount of human activity here from the dawn of toolmaking and tool use itself. The Acheulean Hand Axe is the second tool that humans ever made and this technology spread throughout Africa, Europe and Asia while no definitive evidence exists that this technology ever made it to the Americas. I think this is evidence that this technology was shared and disseminated intentionally, that neighboring humans didn’t come up with this independently on their own but this was a legacy, an institution, a skill and an industry that was shared and taught. It is perhaps the earliest evidence we have of widespread cultural diffusion throughout Africa, Europe and Asia. And yes, it’s right there at the Richat Structure which leads me to question the role that the Richat played to humans half a million years ago. A stunning reminder of why we cannot give up... on our rivers yesterday, as I stumbled across an adult eel on the Roding for the first time, lounging in the shallows in the shade of a council tower block & within earshot of the North Circular. This now rare & magical sight used to be common, until eel populations crashed on the Roding in the 1980’s & have not recovered. Seeking to understand & reverse this population crash should surely be a key role for the governments environmental regulator, but as usual they have done nothing to improve water quality or remove barriers to eel migration. Worse, they are actively blocking my efforts to help the eel population recover. Ordinarily, baby eels (elvers) for restocking are expensive to buy. However, I managed to secure a kind donation of elvers from fishermen on the River Severn (where the elvers often get stuck behind barriers on the river). I applied for my Environment Agency restocking permit like a good boy & all they had to do to help recover eel populations on the Roding was to say yes. Perhaps predictably, my application was rejected, because there was no positive evidence that reintroducing eels to the Roding would be a good thing. Perhaps most annoyingly, my application to restock eels on the Roding was rejected because reintroducing them would interfere with the EA’s monitoring of their continued decline. I asked what would happen if I went ahead & released the elvers anyway & was told that the EA would fine me up to £50,000. Yet another example of the malevolent uselessness of the EA: obsessed with procedure, but will do absolutely sod all to actually reverse the decline in our rivers.show more

I'm sorry, but 343 got mogged judging by the reactions. You can nit at the AI video, but imagine if they spent a week polishing it rather than 5 minutes. This is a combination of 343 just not being good enough to deserve Halo and AI getting better every day. The comments are completely predictable. Every artist is defending the 343 version, not because they really thought about it, but because the perceive AI as a threat that must be taken out at all costs. Meanwhile non-artists see a lot of merit to the AI version and the potential. I see the issues with the AI version, but I bet you a few more days on the AI version, perhaps generating 3D assets with it, would end up being the clear winner. The majority of Hamas fighters are highly motivated and overwhelmingly willing to sacrifice their lives. The majority of Israeli fighters are motivated, yes, but most of them do not have a military mindset or the same level of willingness to sacrifice their lives. Some of them do, of course, but remember the majority of the Israel military consists of normal citizens who are required by law to join, not people who would necessarily feel called to duty otherwise. So how does that relate to nuclear weapons? Using just a small nuclear weapon in Gaza would likely make everyone there rush to evacuate which is what Israel truly wants. They would like to take that land and reduce the threat from such a long border. If Israel continues on the path they are currently on the war will take years or even decades and may never truly be won. If they stage a false flag to use as justification for a small nuclear weapon in Gaza, they could potentially end the conflict in only a matter of weeks. Do not panic as speculation is required to believe they are about to do this, however it is still important to stay alert for that very real possibility. Something is broken in our Uganda Police Force. This... State Witness, a full Regional Scene of Crime Officer, showed up in court, took oath, said he had visited a murder scene with a certain police officer, Mary Mbabazi. The defense says he’s lying about having gone to the scene of crime with said police officer and at said time. A video is played showing Mary Mbabazi arriving alone. Police officer recognizes her and says yes, that’s Mary Mbabazi. He’s not anywhere in the video. It’s played for minutes before and after arrival. He confirms he’s nowhere in the video. It’s put to him by Jet John Tumwebaze that he lied. He says he didn’t lie. The video clearly shows he lied. He insists he didn’t lie. Perhaps the video recorder just edited him out. These are the Uganda Police Force officers the state wants to rely on to convict someone for murder. These are the police officers that have filled up our jails to 4 times capacity. Same police officers are being accused of back-dating police forms 17A and submitting forged documents. Police officers filed two PF17As that are alike on everything, down to placement of commas and stamps but one has extra exhibits. The witness is having a difficult time explaining why a carbon copy has different information than the original. Witness says “pens fails sometimes”. The Chief State Prosecutor tries to step in and Mr Tumwebaze, with whom they seem to have no love lost, tells him not to bother helping his (the defense’s case). He says: “why are you helping me with my case, Mr Muwaganya? You help yours. You can’t fail to help yours and help mine”. The man is only serving violence. This 2d and 10 play in the 2Q of... the #Eagles-Chiefs game caught my eye live because it was one of a few attempted deep shots, and while Jalen Hurts may have been expected to pull the trigger to DeVonta Smith up top on the dagger/go double move, I questioned the route concepts and spacing on my latest podcast episode with Mike Sielski. I’ve since asked a few impartial sources that are more experts on this sort of thing, and while they both qualified their answers with not knowing intent, etc., they thought, yes, Hurts could have thrown it, but the Chiefs also got him off the first read, and still had safety help over top, although it looked like Smith got him to turn his hips at the break. Jahan Dotson was the No. 2 at the bottom, and he should be separating when Hurts moves off No. 1. Chiefs had him covered, though, in man. Normally, that route can be more intermediate and/or over the middle. Doesn’t have to be, but another source agreed you’d like to have at least an intermediate No. 3 underneath in Hurts’ line of vision. Clearly that wasn’t the case here. Hurts had all sorts of time and no obvious options after 1 and 2. Calcaterra stayed in to chip, and Barkley to block to set up the shot. All makes sense. Perhaps Calcaterra as the No. 3 could have kept going into the void over the middle on an option route? Nothing egregious here. No easy answers. But thought I’d provide more analysis on a play that I questioned live and in the podcast. Either way, the Eagles are struggling to get guys open downfield deep and on intermediate routes and, at least on Sunday, Hurts maybe missed a few early chances. He and Smith told me after the game that they thought they were “chasing it” too often in the first half. Kevin Patullo’s game planning was more conservative in the 2H and that ended up being enough. #Bangladesh: India's Reckless Actions Are Worsening the Flood Crisis... in Southeast Bangladesh For the first time in generations, Bangladesh's entire southeastern region is facing its worst flooding in history affecting millions of people. The cause? Indian authorities opened the gates of the Dumbur Reservoir in Tripura for the first time in three decades, releasing massive volumes of water into an already rain-soaked region. (Read: Could there have been flooding without India opening the Dumbur Reservoir gates? Perhaps yes, but on a significantly smaller scale. The sudden release of water from the dam has inundated the region to an extent it hasn't experienced in generations. International law obliges India to notify Bangladesh of any actions that could cause significant harm downstream. Yet, India's failure to notify Bangladesh before opening the gates has caused significant distress and damage. Unfortunately, the Dumbur Reservoir is just one of many dams India has built on the rivers that flow into Bangladesh. Of the 54 transboundary rivers shared between the two countries, India has constructed dams on at least 30 of them, with the Farakka Dam being the most infamous for its catastrophic impact on northern Bangladesh. India's unilateral construction of dams and its arbitrary control of water flows have become a constant threat to Bangladesh, causing either drought or flooding downstream. This reckless behavior has devastated millions of lives and wreaked havoc on the environment. For example, over 80% of Bangladesh's 20 million small farmers depend on water flowing through these transboundary rivers to grow rice. Here are some of the key obligations that India is failing to uphold: 1) Under Articles 5 and 6 of the UN Convention on the Law of the Non-Navigational Uses of International Watercourses (1997), upstream and downstream countries have the right to equitably and reasonably utilize shared waters. 2) Article 7 of the 1997 Convention, along with customary international law, obliges upstream countries, like India, to prevent significant harm to downstream nations, such as Bangladesh. 3) The Espoo Convention (1991) and customary international law mandate that upstream countries notify and consult with downstream states before undertaking any activities that could significantly affect shared waters. Yet, India has consistently ignored these obligations and has never acknowledged the rights of Bangladesh and its people under international law. Despite these hostile actions, Indian officials continue to claim that they are friendly neighbors—yet they wonder why Bangladeshis hold such deep resentment against them. AI Is Moving Beyond “Generating Videos” — Toward “Generating... Worlds” Over the past two years, AI video models have advanced at an astonishing pace. From Runway and Pika to Sora and Veo, AI-generated videos have become increasingly realistic and more consistent with the physical laws of the real world. Many people believe the next objective is simply to generate videos that are longer, sharper, and more lifelike. But if we take a step back, we can see that the real transformation is not happening in video itself. It is happening in world models. What Is a World Model? In 1943, psychologist Kenneth Craik proposed an idea that would influence artificial intelligence research for decades. He argued that the human brain does not merely react to the outside world. Instead, it maintains an internal model of how the world works. Because we have this internal model, we can predict the outcome of an action before we actually take it. Before crossing a road, we estimate whether a car will pass by. Before catching a ball, we predict its trajectory. These abilities come from continuously simulating the world in our minds, rather than relying entirely on trial and error. This idea later became known by a more formal term: World Model. A world model does not describe a single image or a fixed video clip. It is an internal representation capable of continuously simulating the rules and dynamics of the real world. Why Is AI Research Turning Toward World Models? Because predicting “what comes next” is becoming increasingly central to how AI systems work. Language models predict the next token. Image models predict the next step in the denoising process. Video models predict the next frame. A world model, however, attempts to predict something broader: What should the world look like in the next moment? In 2018, David Ha and Jürgen Schmidhuber proposed in their paper World Models that an intelligent agent could first learn a model of the world, and then use that internal model to plan its actions. The Dreamer series later demonstrated that many complex tasks could be learned by training agents inside an “imagined world.” At the same time, the development of video models such as Sora and Veo led researchers to another realization: A model capable of continuously generating video has already learned, at least implicitly, many of the rules governing the real world. As a result, these two research directions have gradually begun to converge. But Video Is Not Yet a World This is where the distinction is often misunderstood. For a world model to support meaningful real-time interaction, it must solve several critical problems. Most video models today are essentially answering one question: What should the next frame look like? A true world model needs to answer much more: What happens if I take one step forward? If I walk behind a building and then return, will the building still be there? If I suddenly change the camera angle, will the entire space remain consistent? If I enter a command such as: “Summon a dragon.” Will the world respond immediately? In other words, a world model must do more than generate content. It must understand space. It must understand time. It must understand causality. And it must understand interaction. Moving from watching to participating is where the real difficulty of world models begins. World Models Are Entering the Interactive Era One of the latest attempts in this direction is Alaya World, recently open-sourced by Alaya World, or Alaya Lab. Instead of generating a fixed video clip, it generates a world that users can explore in real time. Users can begin with text, an image, or a video, enter the generated scene, move freely through it, and introduce new prompts at any moment during generation. The world responds immediately. According to the publicly released information, Alaya World provides: Real-time streaming generation at 720p and 24 FPS Stable continuous exploration for more than one minute The ability to switch prompts and trigger skills or events during generation Model weights and inference code released under the Apache 2.0 License Training code and datasets planned for future release What makes these capabilities important is not simply the technical specifications. It is that the generated “world” can now support continuous interaction. The official demo shows that users can genuinely control, transform, and explore the generated environment. AI Is Evolving From a Tool Into an Environment Over the past few years, most discussions around AI have focused on content generation. Generating text. Generating images. Generating videos. But world models raise a fundamentally different question: Can AI generate an environment that people can inhabit, explore, and continuously evolve? If the answer is yes, the impact will extend far beyond video generation. Game development, robotics training, embodied intelligence, digital twins, virtual production, and many other fields could be transformed by the development of world models. World models are still at a very early stage. Yet from Craik’s proposal of an internal mental model more than eighty years ago to the emergence of today’s interactive world-generation systems, a clear evolutionary path is beginning to take shape.
