Once your culture is gone, it isn't coming back.... To preserve a culture, you must continually read the books and ideas that created it. That's why we started an online book club to study the greatest texts of Western Civilization. Every month, we study a new great work — so far we've covered Augustine's Confessions, Dante's Inferno, The Count of Monte Cristo, Don Quixote, etc. Currently, we're reading Virgil's Aeneid. Western Civilization has given us the greatest books ever written, but it takes effort to read them, and even more to read them well. That’s what we’re doing here, slowly, together. If you want to support our efforts, please consider a paid subscription. It makes a huge difference to the time and resources we can dedicate to this project. Paid members get: - Live community book discussions (biweekly) - Deep-dive essays to guide you through the books we’re reading - The full archive of book reviews, essays, and our 100 Great Texts reading list - Access to all community discussion threads (via the subscriber chat) - Ability to vote on what we read next This is not school. There are no grades, no credentials, and no status games. Just a community of readers serious about recovering what’s been lost, and using it to build something better. Welcome!show more

Eyes Up ✅ Eyes Down ❌ Let’s talk about... why: 👀 The Spine: Looking down bends your neck and breaks your posture. A neutral chin is a technique win! 👏 ⚡️ The Speed Illusion: Looking down feels faster, but it actually forces your body into a slower position. Keep your eyes up to run faster with less effort. ⬆️ The Awareness: Seeing obstacles 20 meters ahead vs. 2 feet in front of you gives you way more time to react and adjust. 😮💨 The Airway: Tucking your chin can slightly compress your airway. Keeping your head neutral keeps everything open for maximum breathing efficiency. Your homework today: Try looking down for a few strides, then look up. Notice the instant shift in your posture, breathing, and awareness? 👇show more

Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K.² is a third-person action video game... developed by Ritual Entertainment and published by Gathering of Developers in 2000. It was originally released for PC and later received versions for Mac and Dreamcast. It uses a modified version of the Quake III Arena engine, which was quite advanced for its time. 🎮 The protagonist is Julie, portrayed and visually based on Julie Strain, who also starred in Heavy Metal 2000. The game is set 30 years after the events of the film and serves as a continuation of its story. ⚔️ Ritual Entertainment did not want to make the typical video game adaptation of a movie. Kevin Eastman, owner of Heavy Metal and co-creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, supported the idea of making the game a sequel to the film rather than simply retelling its story. Ritual received a complete collection of Heavy Metal issues to study the magazine’s different visual styles and use them as inspiration for its characters and environments. 📚show more

Want to give your child a leg up in... kindergarten (and life)? Expose them to a million extra words. It’s easier than it sounds. I wrote recently about the vocabulary building power of reading aloud to your child. Books expose children to new worlds through their storytelling - and with those new worlds come new WORDS. Words that you may not have had occasion to use otherwise. Reading develops this vocabulary quality in part through vocabulary quantity. A recent study from Ohio State University suggests that children who are read five books a day from infancy will be exposed to 1.4 million more words by kindergarten than those who lack this advantage. If five books seems like a lot, rest assured that there’s advantage to any reading at all. Children read a single book a day will benefit to the tune of 290,000 more words. A rich vocabulary lends itself to explosive reading growth when the time comes. That’s because you can’t truly decode words you don’t know. So read, read, read with your little one. You’ll be amazed by the return on investment. This adorable little book worm was shared to IG by pitterpatterpals_.show more

Most people can’t hold a Reverse Plank because their... nervous system doesn’t feel safe being that exposed. Collapsed shoulders and tight hips are postures of defense. This pose invites the body to leave that state. One minute a day can begin to reverse years of silent tension. If you want the fitness results you see in your mind to become real, you’ll need to teach your body how to relax first. Otherwise, forget the great transformation. You'll burn out before coming close to changing. At first, you may need to adjust the position or do shorter sets. You will notice slight improvements each time, whether it is strength, mobility, or endurance. One day, you will unlock the posture and feel much lighter within. Form Cues: - Hands shoulder-width apart, fingers pointing toward feet or slightly outward - Press palms firmly into the ground to engage shoulders - Lift hips in line with shoulders and heels - Squeeze glutes and push hips up, avoid letting them drop. - Keep legs straight and active, heels grounded - Draw shoulder blades down and together - Open the chest. - Gaze slightly upward or keep neck neutral - Breathe steadily, through the nose if possible - Hold tension evenly through arms, core, and legs Here are three adjustments you could make to ease into the Reverse Plank: 1. Bend the knees slightly - What it does: Reduces the load on tight hip flexors and stiff shoulders. - How to do it: Instead of keeping the legs fully straight, maintain a small bend at the knees and press through the heels. Focus on lifting the hips and opening the chest. 2. Use yoga blocks under the hands - What it does: Elevates the wrists and reduces wrist extension strain, especially for people with limited mobility or wrist pain. - How to do it: Place yoga blocks (or low, stable books) under your palms to give your shoulders more space and reduce the pressure on the wrists. 3. Turn the fingers outward slightly - What it does: Opens up tight shoulders and reduces internal rotation. - How to do it: Instead of pointing the fingers directly toward the feet, turn them slightly outward (about 30–45 degrees). This gives the shoulders more room to move and helps you stay open. You're not reading this by accident. Start using Reverse Planks to take your quality of life to the next level.show more

The fascinating concept of Non-Newtonian fluids, which transition from... a liquid state to a solid-like state when pressure is applied, has a rich history that spans several centuries. The study and understanding of these peculiar fluids have evolved over time, leading to a wide range of practical applications and scientific insights. One of the earliest references to Non-Newtonian behavior in fluids dates back to the 17th century when Sir Isaac Newton formulated the basic principles of fluid mechanics. Newton's laws of fluid motion primarily applied to Newtonian fluids, which exhibit constant viscosity and flow behavior regardless of the applied force or pressure. However, it soon became apparent that not all fluids behaved in this predictable manner. In the mid-19th century, a scientist named Thomas Andrews made significant contributions to the understanding of Non-Newtonian fluids. Andrews conducted groundbreaking experiments with carbon dioxide, revealing that under high pressure, this gas could transform into a liquid. This observation marked one of the earliest instances of pressure-induced phase changes in fluids. The term "Non-Newtonian" itself was coined in the 20th century to describe fluids that did not adhere to Newton's classical laws of fluid dynamics. These fluids exhibited a variety of behaviors, but one of the most intriguing was their ability to solidify or increase in viscosity when subjected to stress or pressure. One of the most famous examples of such behavior is cornstarch mixed with water, which forms a substance known as "oobleck" that becomes more solid when pressure is applied. In the modern era, Non-Newtonian fluids have found applications in various fields, including food science, engineering, and material science. They are used in products like quicksand, body armor, and even in the development of impact-resistant materials. One of the key insights that emerged from the study of Non-Newtonian fluids is the importance of understanding the relationship between stress and strain, as well as the influence of time-dependent properties on their behavior. This knowledge has led to advancements in rheology, the study of flow and deformation in materials, and has practical implications in areas such as industrial processing, medicine, and the design of everyday products.show more

after consistently booking 100 b2b calls/mo from linkedin inbound... funnels... i sat down with Lara Acosta and gave away our ENTIRE playbook in a 1-hour interview → every system → every framework → every DM script for context, a post with 40 comments booked me 4 qualified calls last week a single question in the DMs booked a client 72 calls in 26 days and one lead magnet batch generated 7,000 comments across 4 variations in this interview i break down exactly how all of it works... here's what's inside: → why i think content pillars are dead and what replaced them (awareness stage positioning: problem unaware, pain aware, solution aware) → the lead magnet system we run at 100 per week across all client accounts (what makes a good one, why 50 pages of text is a waste, and why the best lead magnets right now are all Claude/AI related) → the DM conversion framework that turns a free resource into a booked call in 3-5 messages ("hey, what caught your attention?" → discover the pain → drop a case study → assume the yes with a specific date and time) → why engagement doesn't equal revenue and what actually does (30k followers with low engagement booking 10x more calls than before because the conversion infrastructure changed) → the trend jacking strategy that makes dead accounts go viral overnight (spot it on X in the morning, build the resource by noon, post on linkedin by evening) → how to get your first case study using pay-for-results instead of free trials → the competitor analysis shortcut for never running out of content ideas → why the linkedin algorithm conversation is 90% excuse and 10% useful like + comment "POD" and i'll send you the full interview (must be following + RT for priority access)show more

When elephants sleep, they reveal a side of their... lives that we rarely get to see ! Here, a herd of wild elephants is sleeping peacefully on an island of tall grass in Assam. Elephants can rest and doze while standing, remaining ready to move at the first sign of danger. But lying down is different. It allows the body to relax fully and is associated with deeper, restorative sleep, including REM sleep, the stage linked with dreaming. A landmark study of two free-ranging African elephant matriarchs found that they slept for only about two hours a day. They sometimes remained awake for nearly two days and lay down to sleep only once every three or four nights. Sleep patterns vary between individuals, ages, species and environments, and much remains to be understood about sleep among wild Asian elephants. But researchers know that elephants are more likely to lie down when they feel comfortable and secure. That is what makes this sight so beautiful. A herd lying asleep together shows they have allowed their vigilance to trust the landscape around them. Today was my hardest workout before the Javelina 100—an... uphill treadmill supercompensation session accumulating 60 minutes of intervals at 10% grade, starting at threshold and ending harder. I think uphill treadmill threshold sessions can be magical for some athletes. Threshold work is classically defined as LT2 or easier, around what you could sustain for 1 hour. In practice, that feels relatively relaxed at first, and it only starts to get harder after you accumulate a substantial amount of volume. The rationale of threshold work is that it improves lactate shuttling, helping mitochondria be more efficient at processing and transporting lactate, preventing fatigue cascades even at harder efforts on other days (or at easier efforts in marathons or ultras). In other words, it’s primarily an aerobic stress. Faster is not better. The real-world obstacles with threshold work are twofold. First, for most of us, it’s pretty slow when done right, or way too hard when done wrong. A study on the training of elite athletes found that long intervals had the lowest correlation with long-term growth, and this conundrum is probably why—athletes do their long intervals too hard, breaking themselves down without the mechanical or aerobic stimulus to justify it. Second, outdoor threshold work can be an injury risk. If I tried this workout outdoors, it would wreck my calves and high hamstrings for days. The uphill treadmill can help athletes get around these hurdles. It’s slower by design, putting the emphasis squarely on the aerobic system. That helps athletes develop a much more precise understanding of threshold. But perhaps most significantly, the uphill treadmill reduces impact forces immensely. When I finish one of these—even a supercompensation session—I feel fine the next day, allowing me to absorb way more work (and more specific work to my goals). Particularly with age, I find that running training is about managing the efforts that are high impact to be limited and focused. While most of the uphill treadmill work I do is very controlled, it’s also ok to occasionally dig deeper. Today was about supercompensation. It’s not called The Pain Cave for nothing 🔥show more

Back in mid October, my wife woke up at... 2am to what sounded like gunfire after someone came into our culdesac, which is in the middle of nowhere, and turned a trash can near our electrical box into an IED. We know all our neighbors. There’s even law enforcement across the street. This wasn’t anyone’s garbage they were careless with. Someone had thrown aerosol cans and unopened cans of beans and Dr Pepper in there along with full rolls of toilet paper and an accelerant. It ended up melting the asphalt. The following two nights, my dogs were going crazy after someone kept trying to jump the fence. I was not home at the time. I was away working. So I had to come home and post up. The Sheriff surmised what I suspected. It was likely some sort of targeting. Why? I’m involved in a lot of stuff. Some of it makes it on social media, and some doesn’t. Political campaigning, investigations and counter human trafficking. Any of those can invite unwanted guests. Moral of the story is taking a stand against evil and corruption in this nation is not going to go unpunished. Things are escalating. You WILL put a target on yourself if you speak out, and the more successful you are, the more attention you’ll draw. Pray, read your Bible, and arm yourself spiritually. Simultaneously fortify your home, talk to your neighbors, and get comfortable having a gun on you/near you at all times.show more

A highly detailed photorealistic 5-second video of a young Japanese woman with shoulder-length bright pink hair performing live on stage in a small dimly lit music club. She has fair skin, soft bangs, and an intense, passionate expression as she sings into a black microphone on a stand, mouth open. She wears a black sleeveless ribbed tank top, a silver necklace with a small pendant, and a patterned red-and-black geometric guitar strap. She is playing a glossy red Fender-style electric guitar (Stratocaster shape with maple neck, white pickguard, and chrome hardware). Her left hand moves along the fretboard forming chords while her right hand continuously strums and picks the strings in a steady, energetic rhythm. Throughout the full 5 seconds she keeps singing with natural lip and facial movement, her body sways slightly to the beat, and her pink hair moves gently with the motion. The room got quiet the moment she said his... name. I was cleaning the room when an older man from a care home walked in, guiding a very old woman by the elbow. She was close to ninety, wrapped in a long coat, hands trembling like they couldn’t decide whether to hold on or let go. She looked at me and said, “Mallow.” Mallow was our senior dog. Gray on the muzzle, stiff in the hips, gentle in the way that makes you careful with your own voice. He didn’t spin at the gate or beg for attention. He watched people walk past and tried not to hope too loudly. I asked her if she wanted to sit first. She shook her head. “I just… I need to see him,” she said. I walked them down the hallway. She moved slowly, but she didn’t stop. At his kennel she gripped the rail with both hands and leaned forward, like her body knew the place before her mind caught up. Mallow lifted his head. For a second he looked blank, tired, like old dogs do when the world keeps changing. Then her scent reached him. His ears softened. His chest rose once, deep, like remembering hurt and comfort at the same time. I opened the gate and stepped back. Mallow walked out slowly, straight toward her, not rushing, not jumping. He pressed his head into her knees and stayed there, as if the floor finally felt steady. The woman lowered herself onto the bench with a quiet gasp and wrapped both arms around his neck. She started crying, then laughing, then crying again, kissing the top of his head like she was counting proof. “I didn’t leave you,” she kept whispering. “They took me. I tried to come back.” The man from the care home turned away. I did too, because that kind of reunion feels private even when you’re standing right there. Mallow didn’t pull away. He leaned harder into her chest, eyes closed, body heavy and calm, like his job was to hold her together. His tail moved once, then again, slow and sure. When she finally lifted her face, she looked at me and said, “Is he still kind?” I nodded. “He’s been waiting.” And for the first time all week, Mallow looked like he believed the door could open and stay open.show more

This is the prompt for figure 4 head lock:... Begin with a low three-quarter view from Honoka’s left side, showing Arisa standing behind her head. Move closer gradually while keeping Arisa’s hips, knees, ankles, and Honoka’s defensive movements fully visible. 0.0–1.5 sec: Honoka lies facing upward, breathing heavily, with both knees slightly bent and her gloves near her chest. Arisa stands behind Honoka’s head with a wide, balanced stance. She studies Honoka briefly, then bends her knees and lowers into a controlled squat. 1.5–3.0 sec: Arisa sits onto the canvas directly behind Honoka’s head. She places both palms on the mat beside Honoka’s shoulders for balance, without grabbing Honoka’s wrists or arms. Honoka reacts by lifting her head and shoulders slightly and raising both gloves defensively. 3.0–4.8 sec: Arisa shifts onto her left hip and slides her right thigh beneath the back of Honoka’s neck and upper shoulders. Arisa’s right knee points diagonally toward Honoka’s left shoulder, while her right lower leg extends along the canvas beside Honoka’s head. Honoka tries to turn toward Arisa and pushes against Arisa’s thigh. 4.8–6.5 sec: Arisa swings her left leg across the front of Honoka’s upper chest and near shoulder. The back of Arisa’s left knee settles beside Honoka’s right cheek and shoulder line. Arisa keeps her left foot elevated briefly while adjusting the angle, preventing Honoka from sitting upright. 6.5–8.0 sec: Arisa bends her left knee more deeply and brings her left ankle toward the bend behind her right knee. At the same time, she lifts her right lower leg from the canvas and folds it inward, crossing it over the left ankle. Her knees close around Honoka’s head-and-shoulder line, creating a compact closed loop. 8.0–9.5 sec: Arisa secures the crossed-leg arrangement by placing the back of her right knee firmly over her left ankle. She flexes both feet, draws her heels closer to her hips, and rotates her torso slightly toward Honoka’s right side. One hand remains posted on the canvas while the other steadies her own shin. 9.5–11.5 sec: Honoka struggles fiercely. She grips Arisa’s lower leg with both gloves, bridges her hips high, twists her shoulders, and plants both feet against the canvas. She tries to turn onto her side and slide her chin and shoulder toward the open space. 11.5–13.2 sec: Arisa follows Honoka’s movement by scooting her hips backward several inches, keeping her knees tightly connected. She lowers onto one forearm, slightly straightens her upper leg, and pulls the opposite heel inward to stop Honoka from rotating free. 13.2–15.0 sec: Honoka continues resisting without surrendering. She bridges again, kicks her heels against the canvas, pushes at Arisa’s knee, and twists her torso from side to side. Arisa maintains the secured leg configuration with steady posture and controlled pressure. End with Arisa holding the dominant position while Honoka remains conscious, active, and still refusing to tap.show more

I went to a rural Chinese province…so what’s it... like?... My wife and I make the journey back to her hometown every year around spring festival time. It’s about 1 hour out from Liuzhou in Guangxi, it would be considered small by Chinese standards but it seems pretty busy for a westerner from Tasmania 😂. One thing is very clear - I don’t know the percentage but so many people seem to work for themselves, whether that’s their own business or living off the land. Mortgages seem basically non-existent in rural areas, which was a big shock to me the first time I found out haha. People have land, they build on it, the kids and extended family usually build on the same plot. Great concept 👌. This makes sense, as almost all parents fund their kids to study in other cities, pay a large downpayment for a house when they get married or whatever else. The best thing about being here is the sense of community (which I also think is very good in cities) - Everyone knows each other and helps each other out — For example, we had a family friend lend us their car for the whole time we were there ♥️. We spent most of our time on a scooter though, driving around the town, getting bubble tea, Luosifen noodles and just chilling out. The buildings are a bit more run down than you’d obviously get in bigger cities, but that's to be expected, they’ve been around much longer. The roads are quite smooth, no big pot holes or major issues and nothing worse than what you’d find in Europe. Supermarkets, restaurants and public services are everywhere!! You can't go 100 metres up the street without seeing 3 supermarkets and 10+ restaurants. The only real downside is there’s no trains linking to bigger cities or other areas, but hey the US hardly have this so whatever ... .There are what seems to be infinite buses though 👍 My wife’s family's house is just... normal, fast internet, modern appliances and whatever else you’d find in your country. Feels stupid writing this, but some may have thought otherwise haha. I still struggle with the hole in the ground toiles…that I’ll never get used to. Luckily there’s a sit down toilet upstairs, so I’m safe 😎. The squating skill is an inherited talent I swear. – Guess this blows the theory of “China is like the 19th world, can’t even eat or go outside." Until next year, Guangxi 🫶.show more
